Last week I was a little surprised when the Mets reassigned Robinson Cancel to Minor League camp. Given how difficult it is for Ramon Castro to stay healthy for an entire season, I thought Cancel would be one of the last guys to go this spring. Cancel did a decent job filling in last year and actually had a couple of big hits for us including down the stretch on September 25th when his RBI in the bottom of the 8th inning tied the game 6-6 against the Cubs, which we won 7-6 in the ninth on a walk-off single by Carlos Beltran. I asked Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post about the Mets sending down Cancel during his live chat. He replied that the Mets are very concerned about their depth behind Castro, and wanted to look at some of the other catchers in camp. He added that they already know what they have in Cancel, so they sent him down to get a closer look at Josh Thole, Omir Santos and particularly Rene Rivera who they really like. I think Thole is still a couple of seasons away, but Santo...

Hill to Start Season on DL; O's Lose to Cardinals

If things with the Baltimore Orioles pitching rotation were not shaky, they are now even more so. The news out of camp today concerning Rich Hill may be precautionary, but it's a step back for the hurler, and the coaching staff... Rich Hill, who was acquired this offseason with the hope that he would be the Orioles' third starter, was officially ruled out for the Opening...

The Birds Down In Florida...

Ah, seeing the Baltimore Orioles down in Florida is a great respite from the sordid MacNamee-Clemens saga and the stench of drugs in the sport right now. From all account from the scribes from camp, things seem to be laid back and coming along. Jeremy Reed Seals The Deal With Big Day

Jeremy Reed has just about sewn up a spot on the opening day roster as the fourth outfielder. Today against the Braves, Reed had a banner day going 4-5 with two runs scored and four ribbies. Ironically, he wasn't even supposed to play today as Carlos Beltran was slated to start but was scratched minutes before the game and replaced by Reed. Jeremy Reed is now batting .426 and...

Cringing at the Orioles' Starting Rotation

The vast improvement of the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league system brings much hope for an organization trying to break a string of 11-straight losing seasons and return to contention in the cutthroat American League East. However, two decisions made over the weekend signal a harsh reality of the present, and the need for more patience as the organization waits for its bumper crop...

Buster Olney's Take On The Orioles...

Buster Olney has a real long piece about the Baltimore Orioles in his blog this morning. As you can probably gather with the little bit I have below, the team is making strides; however, it may be a while -- as we all probably have fathomed -- before (and that's an if) the Orioles contend in the American League East. It's going to be tough this season; maybe even in 2010...

Harold Baines Named to Baltimore Orioles’ Hall of Fame

Harold Baines, Maryland native and former Baltimore Orioles designated hitter, has been named to the team’s Hall of Fame. A .301 average, 107 home runs and 378 RBI aren’t bad numbers at all for three separate tours with the O’s between 1993-2001. Three separate tours that totaled 666 games. Some people say the Devil has cursed [...]

AL East Preview: Baltimore Orioles

We kick off our preview of all 30 MLB teams with the Baltimore Orioles who I predict will finish fifth in the AL East. The Orioles are a good team with a lot of talent but they do not have enough to compete with the Yankees or the Red Sox and they will barely compete the the Rays.Keep and Eye on: Adam Jones, ofIn 132 games last year, Jones batted .270 with nine homers and 57 RBIs...

In an interview he sent this personal message to reigning NL MVP Jimmy Rollins, "So this year, to Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat.". Just to let you know Carlos, J-Roll was...
