Hideki Matsui is expected back for the Yankees as early as Tuesday, when the Bombers open a series with the Blue Jays. Joe Girardi said he expects Godzilla, whose been on the DL with inflammation in his knee since June 27, to play DH for the rest of the season to decrease the risk of reinjuring the outfielder's balky knee. Sunday's offensive explosion aside, the Yankees could surely use Matsui's left-handed bat, and (ideally) his clutch hitting. But is Matsui's return too little too late for New York's playoff hopes? Contradictory to what the New York Post's George A. King III suggests, the Yankees season did not die on August 13. Heading into Monday, New York trailed the Red Sox by five games in the wild-card chase and the Twins/White Sox by 4.5 games. The Yankees aren't dead, just on life support. That's exactly why they need all hands on deck for the final six weeks of the season. Even Carl Pavano may be getting in the act, with a potential Saturday start against the Orioles looming.
2 Comments:
  • I think his absence has definitely been felt. Right along with Chien Ming-Wang. Matsui is definitely a bomber and Wang is defintely a Cy Young thrower. They need these two weapons back in the arsenal.
  • Yes, but with Pavano coming up they might as well start thinking about the 2009 season.

Sherman: ‘Coughlin blueprint’ should be Girardi’s model

Joel Sherman wrote Sunday in the New York Post that Joe Girardi "should follow the Coughlin blueprint." That's Tom Coughlin, of course, head coach of the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. Girardi needs to improve how he conducts himself as Yankees manager - something even he concedes must occur. But the template should not be [...]

Girardi Might Have Competition From the Far East

Regardless if the Yankees make another move, 2009 will be a huge season for Joe Girardi. After taking over for Joe Torre, Girardi was expected to bring a new style to the Yankees. Outside of his focus on team conditioning, last season was a complete washout for “General Joe”. His lack of ...

Girardi’s seat is already warm

Joe Girardi might wish he never chose uniform No. 27 when he was named New York Yankees’ manager prior to the 2008 season. The number, signifying the Yankees’ hunt for an elusive 27th World Series title, is nothing less than a bulls-eye on Girardi’s back. If the Yankees don’t win that 27th title in 2009 — [...]

Would Yanks Use A-Rod To Fill In For Jeter?

Via the Post: The Yankees don't want to believe Derek Jeter's strained left quadriceps will cost him more than a few games. But what if they aren't so fortunate? One possibility Joe Girardi didn't rule out last night was moving former shortstop Alex Rodriguez back to his old position. "There's...

Bronx Banter: Shoot

Well, that sucked. Tough 4-3 loss for the Yanks. A long rain delay helped prolong the agony for the Yankees but the crucial moment in the game was when manager Joe Girardi let Mike Mussina pitch to Manny Ramirez in the sixth. This is Manny we're talking about.

Joes

Good morning! There are two new major league baseball managers, one on each coast. Joe Girardi has officially been named the skipper of the New York Yankees, and has a three year contract. At the press conference held to announce his hiring, he spoke of his Dad, who is sick, and that touched me. The man has a big heart and the love he has for his family is real. He said this, taken...
