Already beginning the PR machine the Mets have begun to discard the top tier of free agents as being too expensive and are beginning to focus their efforts on the next level of free agents. One of the first things to come out of the GM meetings was that were already finding excuses to not be interested in Matt Holliday, Jason Bay and John Lackey. The excuse with Lackey was his history of injuries and according to Jon Heyman they are now looking at guys like Joel Pineiro. Pineiro is the type of guy who excelled under Dave Duncan and even without the pitching guru probably does better in smaller markets. The 31 y/o right hander has a lifetime ERA of 4.39 with an 87-79 record. His best years came in 2002-2003 with the Mariners until he rebounded last year in St. Louis, in 2007 he had an awful first half with Boston before being traded to the Cards. #mets interested in improved pitcher joel pineiro. but dont seem thrilled if $30 mil for 3 is the price tag, as expected. source jon_heyman ...

Adam Wainwright told KSLG Radio in St. Louis that Matt Holliday will eventually re-sign with the Cardinals, adding: “I think he’ll be back… I know Matt, I know his family, and I know he wants to back.  It’s going to take a perfect situation to get him to leave.” …hat tip to Rotoworld for the link and [...]

Cardinals Interested In Xavier Nady

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak expressed interest in Xavier Nady and other Scott Boras clients, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Presumably Nady would be a low-rent option for left field.  Of course, that's not the lead of Strauss' article - the focus is Matt Holliday and the Cards' attempt to sign him. Mozeliak met with Boras for an hour...

Mets Interested in Pineiro and Edwin Jackson

Two more names popped up on the rumor mill tonight: Joel Pineiro and Edwin Jackson. I am not surprised hearing Pineiro’s name since I thought back in September the Mets would go that route versus upgrading to John Lackey. The word that Pineiro wants $30 million for 3 years should motivate the Mets to either get [...]

Where Darren Oliver = Matt Holliday Happens

The official Elias free agent compensation rankings were released earlier today.
