"We've got to win a little more for [the fireworks operators] to get some practice." (Josh Bard, via Washington Post, 7/5/2009)
With apologies to Dan Steinberg, who has lovingly documented the 2009 Nationals Fail Series in all its gory glory, we feel obligated to capture the latest in the series: Nationals Fireworks Fail Redux. As you remember, Dan reported on the original Nationals Fireworks Fail last month; yesterday, they nearly* took it up a level.
In the 9th inning, leading 5-3 with two outs in the 9th and Chipper Jones at the plate facing Mike MacDougal and a 3-2 count, Jones fouled off the next pitch. Setting off: Fireworks! Momentarily. Seems someone on the Nationals pyrotechnics team has an itchy trigger finger. Jones walked on the next pitch. In the photo above, you can see the post-Fireworks smoke courtesy of MASN. Here...

Manny NOT Being Manny Leads to Win
(by Steven Ruiz) Two outs, two on, in the top of the eighth inning. Nats lead the Braves 4-1 with Scott Olsen on the mound. He has 97 pitches under his belt, and here comes Manny. We've seen this before. Another impressive performance from a Washington starter turned over to the bullpen. A walk, sandwiched by a couple of hits later, and the Nationals--suddenly--find themselves...
Learn It. Live it. Love it.
Attention Ladies! It’s that time of year once again when the Washington Nationals host their Baseball 101 Women’s Clinic. If you’ve been to the clinic before, you might notice that the Nationals are mixing it up a little this year. For one, it takes place on a Friday - July 17th to [...]
Dunn's 300th HR helps cool Braves, rookie Hanson
Atlanta's Tommy Hanson extended his scoreless innings streak to 26 before Adam Dunn's 300th career homer and the Washington Nationals rallied for four eighth-inning runs and a 5-3 victory over the Braves on Saturday.
The Braves Should be Embarrassed
I made the argument last week that in order for the Braves to contend again, they had to keep pitching, play Prado, and stay poised. They managed to do 2 of 3. So they lost 2 of 3 to the pitiful Nationals, who consist of Adam Dunn, Ryan Zimmerman, and a bunch of K-Mart clerks.
Tommy [...]
Missed opportunities doom Nats, Stammen
DENVER | Of the Washington Nationals' many two-plus-two-equals-five losses this season - the ones that seem to defy logic - few have involved a pitching performance this crafty or fielding this effective in preventing runs. The Nationals have lost plenty of games on a bullpen meltdown or a botched fly ball. But they haven't lost when one of their rookie starters weaves through...
Nats' Dunn ends rookie's streak with 300th HR
Atlanta's Tommy Hanson extended his scoreless innings streak to 26 before Adam Dunn's 300th career homer and the Washington Nationals rallied for four eighth-inning runs and a 5-3 victory over the Braves on Saturday.
Nationals DFA Jesus Colome
According to the Associated Press, via ESPN.com, the Nationals have designated right-handed reliever Jesus Colome for assignment.Colome, 31, had an 8.40 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 12/6 K/BB ratio in 15 innings of relief for the Nats. He allowed 29 total baserunners during his short time in Washington and will either be traded, released or outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse within the next...
Nationals' Dunn hits 300th career home run
Nationals slugger Adam Dunn hit his 300th career home run Saturday, ending Braves rookie Tommy Hanson's consecutive scoreless innings streak at 26 with the milestone blast.
Washington Nationals (24-55) at Colorado Rockies (42-39), 8:40 p.m.
Jason Marquis will try to become the first 11-game winner in the majors tonight, when he leads the Colorado Rockies in the first of three straight games versus the Washington Nationals at Coors Field.
Morning Bog: A Near Nats Fireworks Fail
Had the Nats gone on to lose yesterday afternoon, the Fireworks Fail would have been so agonizingly perfect that the rest of the Fail Campaign would have to have been called off, because you can't mess with perfection like that. It's like talking during a perfect game. A premature fireworkulation, followed by a walk to Chipper Jones, followed by a game-winning home run; that...
