Found March 16, 2009 on Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:

Another new face to the Mets this year, 32 year-old Alex Cora joins Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes up the middle and gives manager Jerry Manuel yet another left-handed bat off the bench. Cora is often confused for his brother Joey, even though he is ten years younger and has not seen the same success Joey did during his 11-year career.
Having played for the Boston Red Sox since 2005, the pressure of playing in New York should not be a problem for Cora, and just as everybody else is, he should be well aware of the expectations riding on this season. For many fans, 2009 seems like a "now or never" type season, even though that is clearly not the case. Instead, it is just one of the many thorns on the rose that is New York sports.
During his time in Boston, Cora did not see very much success as a role player off the bench for Terry Francona. In 2006 and 2007 he hit .238 and .246, respectively, in a combined 179 games. However, in 2008 Cora was forced to fill in for the injured Julio Lugo for almost the entire second half of the season, and he did a decent job in doing so by hitting .270/.371/.349 in 79 games.
If he can bring that sort of production to New York off the bench, fans will not necessarily be jumping in the air, but they shouldn't be complaining too bad considering their bench production in 2008.
Even with the rejuvenated (so far) Luis Castillo impressing folks in spring training, there are still more than a few concerns as to whether he can stay healthy or not. Given his recent history, the possibility that Alex Cora will be the Mets' second baseman for a good portion of the 2009 season does not seem far-fetched.
The question is, have the Mets struck gold with another 2007 Marlon Anderson-type bench player? Or will Alex Cora just be another guy fans will love to boo?
Personally, I don't have high expectations or high hopes for Cora in 2009, and if the Mets are forced to play him at second base for more than 70 games then they will be in serious trouble. However, I have been wrong before, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing, either.
2008 Stats (BOS):
75 G, 152 AB, 0 HR, 9 RBI, .270/.371/.349
2009 Prediction:
58 G, 140 AB, 2 HR, 14 RBI, .265/.350/.330

Hudson wants to be a Met ?.....

Orlando Hudson would be the perfect fit at second base, not only defensively but he'd fit perfectly into the two whole in the line-up along with providing energy in the clubhouse. The true question will be whether the Mets can move Luis Castillo to make room for Hudson. I've been concerned that it may take too long to move Castillo and by then Hudson will have already...

New York Mets 2009 Rundown: Jose Reyes

Arguably the most electrifying player in Major League Baseball, 25 year-old shortstop Jose Reyes has seen himself become the heart and soul of the New York Mets. Whether or not that is a good thing, however, is up for debate.Reyes broke into the big leagues at 20 years old in 2003, where he hit .307 with 32 RBI and 13 stolen bases in just 69 games for the Mets. But that sort of success...

My Two Cents on Reyes for Santana

I'm still in the process of catching up on December's backlog of e-mail. Back at the end of November I wrote about all of the trade rumors circling about, and made the following statement about the speculation that the Mets would deal Jose Reyes for Johan Santana: I know there are some who would ma...

Steve Bartman sighting in Arizona

If you're from Chicago, you remember the play. The Cubs were five outs away from going to the World Series. With one out in the top of the eighth inning in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, Luis Castillo slapped a Mark Prior fastball toward the left field corner and Moises Alou sprinted toward the dividing brick wall. And while most fans with a grasp of baseball common sense..

Lugo To Have Surgery

Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo is going to have arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday, the Providence Journal is reporting. If all goes well, Lugo could be back on the field in about a month. Lugo hit .268 with 1 HR in 82 games last season for the Red Sox, and won't be a free agent until after 2010. However, if Lugo gets 2,400 plate appearances between 2007-2010, an option for 2011...

Kerry Wood Over K-Rod or Fuentes... It's Not Even Close

I love reading those chat transcripts on ESPN, especially Keith Law's chats. This week was very interesting as far as Mets Q&A's go, plus I found some good humor mixed in as well. Lemon (NJ): Hi Keith, if you were the Mets would you sign Krod or Fuentes for 3 yrs or Wood for 1-2? Keith Law: Wood. Not even close. My Thoughts: I want Kerry Wood in the worst way. It'...

Mets interested in Juan Pierre

According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are interested in Dodgers Outfielder Juan Pierre. To move Pierre, the Dodgers would need to assume a large chunk of his remaining salary a?" $10 million in 2009, $10 million in 2010 and $8.5 million in '11. The Mets' preference in left field is for a right-handed hitter, and Pierre hits from the left side. Where...

Is Castillo at the point of no return....

Is there any chance Luis Castillo can rebound as a Met from his horrible year in 2008. Many Mets fans were incensed by Castillo contract prior to the start of the season, then Castillo had an awful year and it became hard for him to even take the field. Now most Mets fans want him gone no matter what it takes for that to happen.... Eric Simon of Amazin Ave. in a great post disputes...
