I'll have to throw a shout out to DJ for pointing out that the terrible foul call on Joe Mauer's ground-rule double last night happened on the 13th anniversary of the Jeffrey Maier incident at Yankee Stadium. Umpire Phil Cuzzi whiffed on Mauer's soft fly ball, which fell about a foot inside the foul line in left field and bounced out of play. It should have been a leadoff double, and Major League Baseball should extend the replay system to fix something that egregious, but it wouldn't have been challenged because the play wasn't visible from the Twins dugout. It is rather curious that the Yankees seem to have this kind of thing happen in their favor more than other teams, but it's probably just because they're in the postseason a lot more than any other team. So $200 million buys you a winning team and the occasional bonus call. Who knows whether the Twins would have scored and won the game. Mauer ended up hitting a single and the Twins l...

Phil Cuzzi Blew It

(Photo by Reuters Pictures. Makes you wonder what Phil Cuzzi was looking at. Joe Mauer's no-doubt ground rule double in the 11th was ruled a foul ball by umpire Phil Cuzzi, despite the fact that the ball landed at least a foot fair before bouncing into the stands. Ignore the fact that Mauer eventually singled and the Twins loaded the bases with no outs, but failed...

Mauer not 100%

Joe Mauer didn’t score on a single last night because he’s hurting: Joe Mauer had caught 10 innings for Minnesota on Friday night as he stood on second base, representing the go-ahead run in the 11th inning. When Michael Cuddyer rapped a sharp single to center field, Mauer ran to third and did not try to [...]

Horrible Call

Joe Mauer hits a ball down the leftfield line that ticks off Melky Cabrera’s glove and lands in fair territory. It touched his glove in fair territory. The umpire called it foul. What’s going on in these division series? Mauer ends up singling up the middle, but he should of had [...]

The umpire who botched Joe Mauer fly ball call Friday night, Phil Cuzzi, was fired as a MINOR league umpire in 1993. Was a hotel bartender when he was hired back after a "chance meeting" with MLB official in "VIP lounge"

One of Each

A.J. Burnett gets a fly out, ground out and strikeout in the first, along with a walk to Joe Mauer. It’s an example of Burnett strategically walking a tough hitter. I’m not really that cool with giving batters free passes, but Burnett seems to be making it work. Update: Blackburn gets a grounder and [...]

Blown Call Raises Questions

After witnessing umpire Phil Cuzzi's blown call in last night's Twins-Yankees game, the Biz of Baseball is calling for MLB to expand its use of instant replay.

Should instant replay be expanded in wake of Friday's blown call?

Blown call on Joe Mauer's fly ball prompts new questions about instant replay

Yankees rally to win Game 1

Ron Gardenhire manages Joe Mauer, so he recognizes studs when he sees them. Last night in Game 1 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium the Twins manager saw them almost everywhere he looked in the Yankees’ lineup. “Everyone is a stinking All-Star,” the Twins...

Burnett Wild Again

With two out in the fifth, Burnett walks Orlando Cabrera and Joe Mauer. That’s the second inning in a row he put two on without a hit with two out. The Yankees got lucky last inning with a base running blunder.

Joba in the Seventh

Joba Chamberlain starts the seventh and gets the first two batters before giving up a hit to Joe Mauer. Girardi takes him out at that point, making me wonder if Joba is on a pitch count. For those of you wondering where Joba’s velocity went this year, he was hitting 95 or better [...]

Twins Place Tolbert on DL; Mauer in Pain

Chad Jennings reports that the Twins have placed third baseman Matt Tolbert on the DL with a pulled oblique. He hit .235 with a .360 OBA (no typos there) in 164 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Twins catcher Joe Mauer isn't "feeling too well," acc...

Span has become Twins' second-most vital player

Outside of Joe Mauer, no one is more important to the success of the Twins than leadoff hitter Denard Span.
