Found April 09, 2009 on Mondesi's House:
Quite an unsettling trend has developed through the first four Pirate games: good game, bad game; good game, bad game. Being that they had 17 hits last night, that means today was due to be a "bad day", so we then shouldn't be surprised that the Buccos would get a total of one hit in a 2-1 loss in St. Louis.Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter took a no-no into the seventh inning, but Ramon Vazquez would have none of that, singling under 2B Skip Schumacher's glove with two outs in the seventh. The Pirates went three-up-and-three down in five of the first six innings, managing an unearned run in the third for their only run of the contest. There were no extra-base hits by either team, so I hope the 35,293 in attendance liked pitching. On the positive side, Ross "Mr. Wonderful" Ohlendorf was OK, surrendering two runs and seven hits over six innings. But beyond that, there obviously wasn't much to write home about for the Buccos on this day. That being said,...

A day game?

We've got a weirdly placed afternoon game today, which will feature Paul Maholm and Johnny Cueto on the mound. You'll note that the Reds moved their starter from last night's rainout back a day in the rotation, while the Pirates did not do the same for Jeff Karstens. Both LaRoches are back in today's lineup, while John Russell will be in the dugout with his arm in...

Tough Weekend = Sweep to Pirates

Johnny Cueto looked pretty mortal today as he suffered his first major league loss at the hands of Pirates.  The three game sweep turned a nice 6-4 record into a rather mediocre 6-7 record and the Reds sit just one game ahead of the last place Astros.  Still, they're just three games out of first [...

Chris Carpenter: The Ace is Back

Onwards to Cincinnati

Jeff Karstens makes me nervous. The article about him messing with deliveries all spring just makes me generally uneasy for some reason. It's likely because I'm not sure how good he is to start with, even if I'd rather see him than Jason Davis or Virgil Vasquez in the rotation. He's going against Johnny Cueto, who strikes me as just the sort of pitcher that the Pirates...

The Full Court Press 4/10: Carpenter Comeback, Waiver Wire lineup 1.0,

Thursday’s action was packed full of great story lines. Two Rookies dueled it out in Toronto, Chris Carpenter returned to the game strong, by nearly throwing a no-hitter.  As we head into weekend action, It seems it’s only going to get better. C.C. Sabathia will make his second start on Saturday, so fantasy owners can [...]

LINE OF THE NIGHT: CHRIS CARPENTER

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis: IP H R ER BB K 7 1 1 0 2 7 That huge sigh you just heard was a collective gasp from Chicagoland. At least for now, Chris Carpenter is back. Carp took a no-no into inning 7, and had everything working. From MLB.com: “He threw his fastball at 92-93 mph with heavy sink and good location. His cutter sat at 90 mph and [...]

How 'bout a Do Over?

"It's kind of an excuse to say that it's only the third game, but we had a chance to win [Wednesday's game], and we let it slip. [The entire series] was awful. It's not how we wanted to start our season. The only thing we can do is put it behind us and clear our minds." (Adam Dunn, via Nationals dot com, 4/9/2009) Time to put...

This Week's Man Crush: Endy Chavez

When Ichiro Suzuki returns from the DL, the Mariners are going to have a problem in the outfield. In the first three games of the year, Endy Chavez has shown so far that he is more than capable of being an every-day outfielder. Unfortunately, so have Ken Griffey Jr., Franklin Gutierrez and Ichiro. And Griffey isn’t going to be content hitting DH the rest of the season. He’s going...

Top 12 signs that you really haven't been following baseball

by DMtShooter, Five Tool Tool12. You think black Americans play the game11. You believe that the season ends in October10. You always thought Ken Griffey Jr. was on the Mariners9. It surprises you that the team in Washington is called the Nationals8. Asian players seem incredibly exotic7. You still think of Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez as players, rather than circus freaks6. You are sure that

The first random afternoon game of 2009

Yes! It's time to whine incessantly about there being a Thursday afternoon game with a pitching matchup that I really, really want to see! Anyways, Ross Ohlendorf, who dominated the Grapefruit League, and Chris Carpenter, who also looked quite good this spring in his return from Tommy John surgery and more nerve problems in his arm, take the mound at 1:40 today in the final game...

Game 4: Cardinals 2 Pirates 1

What a weird game. The Pirates lead 1-0 for most of it without the benefit of a hit, then got a hit, then gave up two runs and lost. Getting one-hit is never a good thing and Ramon Vazquez getting that one hit is probably only going to encourage John Russell to keep Andy LaRoche on the bench more often. I think that's a bad thing, but I'll go in to that a little bit later...

And we've got a benching

Just two games in to the season, Andy LaRoche is on the bench tonight in favor of Ramon Vazquez. You know, normally I think this is the sort of thing that would upset me, but screw it. If Andy LaRoche is so emotionally fragile that he can't handle the pressure of the big leagues, we're going to have to find some other plan at third base. After a great spring, he's completely...

NO 162-0 RECORD FOR GIANTS THIS YEAR

A pitcher and hitter named Yovani Gallardo spoiled the Giants attempt to become the first team to ever go 162-0, as his Milwaukee Brewers downed the Giants 4-2 in Wednesday's contest.  Gallardo smacked a 3 run homer in the fifth, which turned out to be the difference in the game...Randy Johnson's debut as a Giant didn't go as planned, as he left after 5 innings trailing 4-1. ...
