The Nats gave the Red Sox another good game at Nationals Park last night. Washington took an early 1-0 lead in the second off Jon Lester, which included a fluke single by Elijah Dukes, in which the bat and ball arrived at Nick Green at short at the same time. Fortunately, he was able to avoid the bat. It landed in the outfield with the broken part of it in the grass and the bat standing straight up. With two on and two out, Stammen hung a changeup to David Ortiz on 3 and 2 and the old Papi responded by crushing the pitch to dead center to put the Red Sox out front to stay. It sounded like Fenway Park as the ball sailed over the wall, as I'd bet more than half the fans last night were from Red Sox N...

Pick of the DayToday I'm getting right back on the Red Sox horse for my pick of the day as they play a quasi-home game down in DC. Jon Lester may be the hottest pitcher in baseball and he's been a threat to throw a no-hitter his last few times out. Tonight Bodog has the Red Sox as a -$173 favorite - while that is a bigger number than I would normally find attractive - I know...

Wednesday's Games of the Day

Wednesday's games feature some streaking teams, both winning and losing streaks. Plenty of good pitchers are pitching as well. A couple poor performing pitchers are going as well. We also get a rematch of the two best pitchers from the 2008 postseason. New York Yankees at Atlanta: The Braves gave Chien-Ming Wang his sixth loss of the season on Tuesday behind the four RBI, two...

But we come here not to praise the Bostons. Rather, we come to this place

BOS 6, WAS 4: Homers power Sox

Green dodges bat, misses ball in Boston's 6-4 win

The ball was bouncing toward Nick Green, and so was the tumbling sharp end of Elijah Dukes' broken bat.

Red Sox Swat Away Nats 6-4

David Ortiz and Jason Varitek had home runs to back up a quality outing from Jon Lester as the Boston Red Sox went on to beat the Washington Nationals 6-4 in front of 41,530 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. BOS 11, WAS 3: Bats pummel Nats

Ellsbury had two triples and Bay hit his 19th homer of the season in the win. Brad Penny was dealt a no-decision pitching 5 2/3 innings, six hits, three earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. I Can Barely Recall, But It's All Coming Back to Me Now

Yeah, you're damn right I'm quoting Celine Dion*. And I just don't care. Suddenly, Papi is Papi again, swatting home runs, pulling up his team by the bootstraps and stomping like Godzilla, and I couldn't be happier. Sure, the guy's still hitting a lackluster .219 on the season, but, as today's Globe points out, he's got a .357 average since June 6 and...

Ortiz notches 1,000th RBI, Red Sox top Nats

David Ortiz got his 1,000th RBI, Nick Green played a scary game of dodge-the-bat, and the Boston Red Sox looked right at home again in the nation’s capital Wednesday night in a 6-4 victory over the Washington Nationals.
