With today's victory over the Mets, the Phillies have decreased their magic number by one. Entering this afternoon's series finale the Phillies had a magic number of 34. Who better t represent the new magic number, 33, than Aaron Rowand, who played a critical role in turning the Phillies into a legitimate World Series contender.

With the Atlanta Braves having a day off, the magic number will remain 33 heading into Tuesday's games.

In the midst of a heated Wild Card chase, the San Francisco Giants are also in the middle of an organizational transition. Barry Zito (8-11, 4.26) takes on Jason Marquis 14-8, 3.58) in a game that will conflict the heck out of Dodger fans, who find it troublesome at best and intestine-eviscerating at worst to root for the Giants. And there has been great joy.I said at the beginning that while I would not predict that the Giants will make the playoffs...

San Francisco Giants Rebuild Themselves After Getting Steamrolled by the Rockies

"The one constant through all the years...has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game. It's a part of our past...It reminds us of all that once was good and could be again."—James Earl Jones, "Field of Dreams"...
