TEAMS: Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins
When you get a 4-0 lead after three innings against the lowly, light-hitting Kansas City Royals, you are supposed to win.Not so last night, as the bullpen had a serious meltdown, as Manny Delcarmen, Justin Masterson and Ramon Ramirez all were awful, and let a 5-3 lead turn into an 8-6 loss at Fenway.Brad Penny struggled through five innings, giving up three runs, but left with a lead. David Ortiz blasted his 11th dinger of the year and his 300th of his MLB career, and it was 3-0 after one. It looked like the Sox would coast into a win when it was 4-0 after three, but KC came back with three off Penny in the fourth.Delcarmen allowed two runs, the first he's allowed since mid-June. Masterson gave up a homer to David DeJesus and two more runs in the four-run sixth. Masterson continues to struggle since that meltdown in Baltimore over a week ago.The only bright note after Penny left was Daniel Bard, who struck out three of the four batters he faced in the final 1 1/3 innings of the ...

7/9: 1st half MUP = Penny
What is a MUP? Most Under-appreciated Player. I think the first half award for 2009 Red Sox MUP belongs to Brad Penny. Considering what we expected from him (who thought he'd still be on the team in July?), Penny's ability to go deep in games consistently has given the team a chance to win and kept the bullpen alive and kicking.
Set 'Em Up, Set 'Em Up, We'll Be Knockin' 'Em Down
Really not much to say about this one. The Large Father continued his Say Amen Somebody Revival Tour by belting his three-hundredth home run, but then Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson made like Moe and Larry and coughed up the lead, knocking us out of sole possession of first place. So we're currently at 3-4 on this homestand, having lost a series to the lowly Mariners, taking...
KAN 8, BOS 6: Four run sixth ruins Red Sox
Boston's bullpen could use a break.
Justin Masterson and the rest of the bullpen brass gave up five runs after Brad Penny went five innings allowing six hits, three runs, one walk and one strikeout.
Kansas City answered with four runs in the sixth inning after Dustin Pedroia hit a solo homer (4) in the fifth giving Boston a 5-3 advantage.
David Ortiz also homered in...
Not according to plan
(Photo from Yahoo! Sports)Riddle me this one, kids. Does Brad Penny pitch every day or does it just feel like that because seemingly whenever I have time to actually sit in front of the TV and take in an inning or two, Brad Penny's on the mound. Is that what's happening here or is there some sort of space-time continuum vortex thingie that stops time or telescopes it or something...
Penny for Your Thoughts?
We bet Brad can’t stand to watch Manny Delcarmen and Masterson blow the game either.
That's some All Star pitchin' there Wakey
Wow I just broke a wicked long streak of one post/day yesterday. I swear I had an entry good to go. I must've forgotten to actually post it. Oh well. Red Sox won tonight 5-4. Wake was really good and gave up only 1 ER over 6 innings. Though two other baserunners did score because Nick Green couldn't find the base and Manny Delcarmen is an asshat. Papi hit a 3-run shot and...
The Starters at the break.
What we have in the AL East is the most difficult division anyone has ever seen. Really, anyone. It might very well go down as the best division in the history of baseball, at least up until this point in time. And as expected the race is tight, very tight. With the Red Sox and Yankees separated by merely one game in the standings. The Rays are a little further out...
Odds And Ends: Delcarmen, Jays, Perez
Links for Thursday morning...
Boston native Manny Delcarmen tries not to let rumors about his future distract him, as Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald reports.
As Newsday's Ken Davidoff notes, J.P. Ricciardi's commitments to A.J. Burnett and B.J. Ryan hurt the Jays more than they helped.
Rob Neyer of ESPN.com says Oliver Perez's return was "...

Baseball Before Bedtime: And She Was
Here's what happened in baseball last night when she was moving very slowly:
Royals 8, Red Sox 6: The Red Sox bullpen were called on to protect a moderate lead thanks to a mediocre start from middling pitcher Brad Penny. In the end, the middle relief allowed too many Royals (isn't that the name of a Disney movie? "Too Many Royals!" starring Abigail Breslin as the...
All-Stars Inside the Numbers
Nobody said that statistics constitute the sole criteria for determining either value or selection to the All-Star team. Consider the following table:WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) reflects the pitcher's ability to prevent baserunners from reaching. K/BB (strikeout to walk ratio) tends to predict future ERA even better than current ERA. More dominant pitchers tend to...
Game 86 Recap/Weekend Preview
KCR – 000 304 010 – 8 – 13 – 1BOS – 301 000 010 – 6 – 10 – 1The Sox continued to give away games against lesser teams after blowing a 4-0 lead and dropping an 8-6 decision to the lowly Royals. After marching through a series of first place teams like Sherman through the South the Sox have faced down the Orioles, Mariners, Athletics and now Royals and are a disappointing...
