Mighty Quinn Media Machine:
No comment about Friday's game. I didn't see a second of it as I had dinner with a dear friend of mine. And I'm so glad I did.Tim Wakefield pitched what could be his final rehab start with Pawtucket, allowing just two hits and one run against Rochester. He could be activated over the weekend, and pitch either next Wednesday or Thursday against Chicago. The Sox have badly missed Wake, as well as Daisuke Matsuzaka. I think it's time to admit Brad Penny is as big a failure as John Smoltz was. Time to forget about bringing in reclamation projects and spending the money toward better use. The back end of the rotation has really cost the Red Sox dearly.Another positive is that Tampa Bay beat Texas tonight, so the Red Sox lose no ground in the Wild Card race, which is looking more and more important all the time. They still hold a one-game lead.

...last night's game gets a two-word review: **** sandwich.I figgered Brad Penny would rise to the occasion, prove the naysayers wrong and crank out the game of his career. Instead, he folded like a deck chair, giving up 8 runs over 4 innings and reminding us all that if the Red Sox ever do happen to make the playoffs, he needs to be as far away from the starting rotation as...
Tim Wakefield to Replace Brad Penny in Rotation
So, the first pitcher out of the rotation will not be rookie Junichi Tazawa or the untested Clay Buchholz, but rather veteran starter Brad Penny, who will now make way for Tim Wakefield. Wake has recovered from a lower back strain, an injured left hamstring, and an injured left calf, and will start Wednesday night [...]

Game 120 - Red SoxRed Sox 8, Blue Jays 1Record: 69-51Sweeps are neat. Brad Penny and Junichi Tazawa facing the Yankees tonight and tomorrow: less neat.Still, beggars can't be choosers. The Sox improved to 7-3 post-Bronx beatdown with yet another convincing win up North. J.D. Drew went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and Jon Lester dropped yet another dominant performance, going 8 innings for his
Smoltz fans nine in St. Louis debut
John Smoltz had a brilliant debut with the Cardinals, striking out a season-high nine -- including seven in a row -- and holding the Padres to three hits over five scoreless innings in a 5-2 victory Sunday.
The Smoltz Effect
Ever since the Red Sox waived John Smoltz, Josh Beckett seemed to inherit John’s propensity to allow home runs. He gave up two in the first game after Smoltz left the rotation, three in his second game, and so far, four tonight. Nine of the 19 home runs allowed against Beckett came in [...]
Can Smoltz break the aging athlete trend of tarnishing legacy?
Early yesterday, John Smoltz agreed to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, giving the 42-year old former Cy Young award winner a chance to show he isn’t finished yet.
Tony La Russa's club is hoping he can still contribute down the stretch in a pennant race for the current NL Central leaders.
There were reports that several teams such as the Dodgers, Tigers, Marlins, and...
