Found September 20, 2008 on Eli's MLB Rumors:
It wouldn't be worth reporting this rumor if it wasn't coming from such a reputable source, but ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that the Brewers are interested in trading Prince Fielder, JJ Hardy and another player for the Giants' 23-year old, starting pitcher Matt Cain. This report has been mentioned before, but Gammons brought it up again during a recent broadcast.

  • WHHHHHHHHYYYYY!!!!!!!1
  • As a giants fan, I'll Take that any day
  • Hmmm. I'm not sure. If Zito really was an ace, I'd take it too, but the Giants really need Cain to step up. Lefty hitters have it tough in SF.
  • True. I'm not putting my money on Lincecum finishing the 2009 season healthy either. He threw 138 pitches the other night for a Giants team going nowhere. Nice work, SF. I say he throws 89 innings next season before he and his arm call it a year.
  • Wow, that's a great trade for the Giants. Problem is, who do they replace Cain with?

They don't have the money for Sabathia and if he leaves that rotation, they lose a formidable 2 hole pitcher behind Lincecum.

They shouldn't have wasted money on Barry Zito and put it towards someone like Soriano...typical Brian Sabaen move. He is the worst GM in baseball, bar none.
  • The Giants can replace Cain. Jonathan Sanchez has a lot of talent and Noah Lowry will be back from injury next year. They also have two of the better pitching prospects in the game, Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson. This trade makes a lot of sense for the Giants. I am not sure that the Brewers shouldn't be getting another piece of two in this deal, though.
  • Fielder is on the verge of making a lot of money. Part of me also wonders whether there was more to that Manny Parra scuffle in the dugout a few weeks back. We'll see.
  • I would LOVE to see Fielder over here! Sounds like a pretty lopsided deal to me though. Get rid of Cain!
  • I doubt that Melvin would deal both for just Cain...he already has a bunch of young pitchers and can't afford to lose both his 1B and SS for the entire season. I could see him pulling this deal in June or July if the Brewers are already way back in the race--that way he could promote Mat Gamel and Alcides Escobar from AAA and avoid them becoming Super 2's.
I think Melvin wants to move Hall and/or Weeks more--Hardy could move to either second or third to make room for Escobar; Fielder and Hall would be much more likely...even then, I think the Brewers would want a prospect thrown in.
  • Here we go again .A player whose agent is Scott Boras is going to disturb the team chemistry again. Players that stay yosether win together. I miss the days where you could name the starting players on most teams. I like free agency but the price seems to be agents/playerswith no team loyalty destroying the game. There should be some compromise between the owners and players to preserve the team concept to not make sports look like Wall Street. Is it a game or just business ?

Cubs-Brewers Game Yesterday

I had the good fortune of attending the Cubs-Brewers game yesterday afternoon. I had the Tribune Media Company seats courtesy of my friend Andy, so we were close enough I could've lept the wall and tackled Rich Harden. I chose not to, even though I could've totally taken on the stadium usher standing in my [...]

Today in Florida, the Phillies won and took a 1.5 game edge in the division, cutting their magic number to six. Even in the event of a division collapse, they would still be up three games on the Brewers for the wildcard, so it's very likely that they are going to be playing meaningful baseball after next Sunday. The game was also notable for the 15th (!) win of the season for...

Cubbie Chaser: Somebody Up There...Doesn't LIke the Brewers

What a week, huh? After starting the month by losing 6 of 9 and looking very much askew, Carlos Zambrano comes back from the near-dead to throw a no-hitter against the hottest team in baseball, and then the Cubs work some crazy voodoo magic to take two-of-three from the Brewers and bring their magic number down to 2. If I wasn't, you know, a lifelong fan of this stomp-on-your...

Mets win coin toss

The New York Mets are now 1-1 in coin tosses. They won Friday afternoon's coin toss, giving them home-field advance in a potential one-game playoff against the Brewers. So, if the Mets and Brewers tie for the National League Wild Card lead at end of the regular season, the Mets would host the tiebreaker.

Mets have many scenerios to play with.......

Now that the Mets have re-taken 1st place, the Mets have a magic number of 9. That being said, any combo of Mets wins and Philly loses will make that number drop of course. The Mets also have the wild card slot open to them if they keep teetering with first place. The Mets are unofficially(because they are leading their division) 2.5 games in front of the Brewers in that race.The...

Huff As Good As Gone?

Orioles DH Aubrey Huff is having a career year, hitting .311 with 32 HR in 147 games this season. Several teams will be pursuing a solid first baseman this offseason, and may look to Huff instead of spending the big bucks on someone like Mark Teixeira. The Orioles could definitely use the prospects, as well the extra spending cash to improve in 2009. If they were able to clear half...
