I didn't think I had much of a rooting interest in the Dodgers-Cardinals NLDS until I noticed a fan at Busch Stadium in a MOLINA 4 All-Star jersey. I still didn't think I would glean a lot of satisfaction from this Division Series until Yadier Molina attempted to cross from second to third on a one-out ground ball clearly in front of him and was tagged out with ease. "HA!" I said. "HA!" I said yet again. That kills the Cardinals. That kills Yadier Molina. You can't kill Yadier Molina enough for my tastes. Figuratively speaking...I guess. Of course the Cardinals lost in embarrassing/heartbreaking fashion Thursday night when Matt Holliday couldn't handle a simple fly ball, yet it didn't really register with me as Cardenfreude. Matt Holliday wasn't a Cardinal in 2006 and the game took place in Los Angeles. Most of the Cardinals of today weren't the Cardinals of three years ago. Their presence in red doesn't necessarily set off insecurity alarms in my head. ...

La Russa asks Cards fans to be nice to playoff goat Matt Holliday

ST. LOUIS — Unlike most men in his line of work, Tony La Russa also earned a law degree. It's helpful, theoretically, in making sound arguments with umpires.La Russa does share another, much more useful side discipline with other baseball managers: Psychology. He's Carl Jung good at it. On Friday, La Russa said he wants St. Louis fans to help him massage the psyche...

Why You Don't Make Big Trades: Cardinals

I saw some fans who wanted to trade away Bumgarner, even Posey in an isolated case or two, just to make the playoffs this year. Many wanted to get Matt Holliday. Hopefully they can learn from what happened with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals traded away, basically, their Bumgarner or Posey (yes, we have two of them) in Brett Wallace (plus other players!) in order to get...

Matt Holliday's NLDS error mocked through Green Day parody

It usually isn't Stew protocol to post two videos in a row, but when a Matt Holliday(notes) parody surfaces from Troy from West Virginia — you know, the guy best known for being a Joe Beimel superfan, a notorious ballpark miscreant and an self-admitted bad parent — well, we have no choice but to break form. The last line of the song just kills me.A big BLS head nod to Diamond...

Could La Russa Leave St. Louis?

It seems like a strange concept, but both ESPN's Buster Olney and Kevin Kaduk from Yahoo Sports are asking if it's possible for longtime Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa to jump ship. The Cards were bounced from the ALDS yesterday, swept at the hands of Joe Torre's Dodgers. While many people are focused on names like Matt Holliday, Albert Pujols, Mark DeRosa, and Joel Piniero...

Carpenter would go on 3 days' rest in Game 4

Chris Carpenter will start on three days' rest if the St. Louis Cardinals make it to Game 4 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It's a tactic that's mostly been a failure during manager Tony La Russa's 14 seasons in St. Louis.

Dodgers finish sweep of Cardinals, advance to NLDS

Vicente Padilla shut down Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals, putting the Los Angeles Dodgers back in the National League championship series with a 5-1 victory.

What's next for the Cardinals?

No series surprised me more in the first round than the Los Angeles Dodgers' dismantling of the St. Louis Cardinals in three games.
