Small White Ball:
Even with Sunday's disappointing and depressing Patriots/Jets outcome, there is still plenty of reason to be happy, that being the Boston Red Sox. Left for dead by many after a four-game sweep by the Yankees in early-August, Terry Francona's charges are showing all the doubters why they should just let the season play out before making bold claims. There's a reason why the word 'believe' was so important back in 2004 and 2007. This team does not die, no matter how many times people forget history and assume that they will.So here are 10 Red Sox-related numbers and factoids I came across as we enter the regular season's final two weeks. Let this ease your Patriots-related pain, at least for a little bit. It's going to be a fun October. All numbers are going into Monday.- Boston has 14 games (7 home/7 away) remaining with no off-days.- Heading into 2009, they won 93 games or more in six of their last seven seasons, making the postseason in four of them. They currently sit at 89 wins.- The Red Sox are 52-22 at home and an even 37-37 on the road. - The Red Sox have a 99.9 certainty of making the playoffs, just behind the Yankees' 100%. Their all-important magic number is seven.- AL Central leading Detroit has a 77.5% chance of making the postseason, the lowest of any divisional leader by a long shot. The Angels (the team Boston would play if the season ended today) have a 99.2% chance.- Everyone that thought John Farrell was to blame for John Smoltz and Brad Penny excelling elsewhere should have to revoke their pink Boston hats. The starters have allowed three runs or less in 13 straight and have an 8-1 record and 2.18 ERA during that time.- Josh Beckett's 201.1 innings this year are the most he's thrown since 2006 when he threw a career-high 204.2 frames.- Since giving up five runs on May 26th in a loss to Minnesota, the highest amount of runs Jon Lester has given up has been four - which happened one time in a late-July win. He's lost just once in his last 16 starts. - Since joining the Red Sox on August 1st, Victor Martinez's batting average has jumped from .283 to .297, along with his slugging (.461 to .477) and on-base percentage (366 to .378). In September, he's batting .370 and has a 19-game hitting streak heading into Sunday. He is just two RBI short of his 3rd career 100-RBI season.- Finally, the Red Sox are just five games behind the Yankees in the AL East. Back in August after that sweep and in subsequent weeks, Boston winning the division seemed to be so far-fetched it was ridiculous. Wakefield Set to Return, But For How Long?
After a successful side-session on Friday and strenth test on Saturday, Tim Wakefield prepares to return to the hill on Monday. The return should put him in line for the playoff push, though the reports coming out of Boston are not the most encouraging:
He will pitch once every ten days through the end of the season.
He has a "loose bone fragment" in his lower back...
The Wonderful Year of Jacoby Ellsbury
Jacoby Ellsbury is having just about the type of offensive year that most projection systems expected him to have. His slash line of .304/.356/.423 is just about what ZIPS, James, and company had him for coming into the year. Yet, somehow, I’m very happily surprised at his success. Perhaps it was his mediocre start to the year or his stellar 63/10 SB/CS ratio. But whatever it is...
BOS 9, BAL 3: No Surprise, Sox Sweep Orioles
With another short but sweet start from Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Red Sox were able to whittle the magic number down to seven in the American League Wild Card race, thanks in part to a timely beating to the Texas Rangers by the Angels - and, of course, another systematic dismantling of the Baltimore Orioles.
On the way to a 9-3 victory in Baltimore on Sunday, the Red Sox...

Red Sox Dominate Orioles -- Again
The Red Sox earned a series sweep over the Orioles on Sunday as they earned an easy victory, 9-3, as once again, their bats came alive -- this time early. For the second day, Boston hammered Baltimore pitching; however, instead of the victims being members of the bullpen, starter Jason Berken got knocked around. The Orioles finish their season series against the Red Sox in 2009 with...
Sox & Orioles Finale! Why’s that bad news?
We all remember hearing the ole saying “All good things must come to an end”, right? Well when it pertains to the Boston Red Sox, it’s a bit of bad news for them. As the Red Sox will be playing the Baltimore Orioles for the final time in the 2009 season. Why’s that bad news? When [...]
Dice-K Under Control
Daisuke Matsuzaka lasted 5 1/3 innings for the Red Sox today as they won 9-3 over Baltimore. He struck out five, but only walked one. That gives him four walks and ten strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings since returning from the disabled list.
Jacoby Ellsbury missed the cycle by a triple, as he collected [...]

Weekend Recap/Game 149 Preview
The Sox rolled through Baltimore with a sweep. Thanks to the Angels taking two of three from the Rangers the Sox magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now just seven. The division, while unlikely, is still in play as the Yankees dropped two of three to Seattle leaving the Sox just four out in the loss column with three games in the Bronx next weekend. Chances of a division...
Red Sox-Royals: Tim Wakefield = Done, Boston Bullpen Blows Lead in Loss
After tonight's performance, it appears this could or may be the last start for Tim Wakefield.
The Boston Red Sox blew a 6-0 lead at one point, and in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings, Wakefield and the bullpen imploded, allowing nine runs as the Kansas City Royals rallied big time to defeat the visitors 11-9 at Kauffman Stadium.
Wakefield struggled to get in five...
Comparing Matt Holliday & Jason Bay
This year's crop of free agents isn't the sexiest collection of names we've seen, but Matt Holliday and Jason Bay are two bonafide stars that will be available to the highest bidder. Several teams will be looking for middle-of-the-order run producers, so there will be no shortage of suitors for this pair. Let's take a second to quickly compare the two outfielders...
