John Smoltz has been designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox, likely putting an end to what surely will be a Hall of Fame career. The move comes a day after another poor performance by Smoltz, this time getting rocked by the Yankees.
Smoltz signed with the Red Sox while injured, hoping to rehab and come back strong as a starter, but things didn't go as planned. His Boston career ends after going 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA.
I say it's likely the end of the road for Smoltz because of his age and his horrible performances this year. I don't even think anyone would take a chance on him as a reliever because of his terrible WHIP. He's allowed 59 hits in 40 innings and lefties have been demolishing Smoltz all year long.
If this is it, Smoltz will mostly be remembered for his many years with the Atlanta Braves. He has a career 212-152 record and also compiled 154 saves, proving he could dominate as both a closer and a starter.
