PLAYERS: Jason Varitek
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox

It looks like this soap opera is finally over. According to a few sources, Jason Varitek and the Red Sox have agreed to a 1 year deal with an option year.

2009 - $5 mil.
2010 - Team/Player Option $5 mil plus $2 mil in games played incentives*

Not a bad deal at all. Even if he hits .230 again, Boston will have a catcher for the next 2 years.

* - If the team picks up his option, Varitek will be paid $5 mil. If not, then he has the option to remain with the team for $3 mil or declare himself a free agent.

  • Wohoo, finally!
  • don't get me wrong here...i love Varitek..and what he has done for us...but..i think it was time we moved on..we just need more offensive production from that position.
  • I think we need him for another year, only because there should be some kind of transition period between catchers. If he only plays half the games this year because we picked up some young stud, then that's even better.
  • I would agree with you if there were another option available, but in looking at the market right now Varitek makes since for Boston.
  • I'm not going to debate anyone's strategic view; just wanted to say that I'm psyched that Varitek will be staying with the Sox for at least another year... he's been my favorite for a long time now, and as the team's captain I think he shows a lot of character and back-bone. I just can't see him going anywhere else (or maybe I just don't want to..)
  • Yeah I'm glad he's back too :D
  • Ornith..i undersand what you are saying...and i understand he is your fav...but just not sure it makes sense we are keeping him..." women "..lol...i mean no disrespect Ornith..lol
  • not that i am upset we still have him...but..the time is coming soon...that we will need to upgrade at that position
  • and here is what else i worry about...Varitek getting hurt...not the youngest guy in the world...then where are we..??
  • Same place we'd be if we didn't sign him. Up crap creek without a paddle/catcher :\
  • I hear you, Patsfan! Varitek is an awesome guy, I like the way he carries himself and the way he holds the team together... he has spirit. But oh yeah - those knees have got to be getting sore... would rather not have to see him playing games and then promoting arthritis meds!

And I agree with soxaddict - it would be perfect if we pick up some young stud who's got all the raw talent and just needs Varitek as a mentor and role model...

    Do we have any prospects??
  • we really don't have anybody down in the farm system that could step in and play catcher right now..no...we would have had to make a deal with somebody for Varitek
  • Yeah we're pretty weak in catching. Honestly, Josh Bard (who is signed on a minor league deal) is probably the best we've got. Dusty Brown and George Kottaras (he's out of options) are our minor league catchers. Kottaras has some decent power but probably won't be a starter :\
  • We do need him back for another year. I didn't want to see our captain who has helped win two world series leave on a sour note. There's a lot of young talent coming up and a lot of young talent on the club now that will benefit from him staying. I think this will probably be the last year I say that. He's given to much to the Sox. I hope they win the world series and he retires on top. Another Red Sox storybook ending.

The Varitek Signing Aftershock

As an avid fan of amateur baseball, and incidentally the draft, I was displeased, to say the least, to hear about the Sox decision to re-sign Varitek. It wasn't that I had high hopes that he'd net us two picks, because obviously no team's general manager was foolish give up their first round pick for a 37 year-old rapidly declining catcher who possesses a noodle for an...
