The Sox have taken another step towards solidifying their roster
with a handful of low AVG/high OBP veterans today by signing OF/1B Brad
Wilkerson. Wilkerson has agreed to a minor league deal with roster and
playing time incentives.
He played sporadically last year for Seattle and Toronto while fighting a combination of injuries. His final line for the season was a .220 AVG, .308 OBP, with 4 HR and 28 RBI.
This isn't as bad a signing as it looks on paper. It's pretty much guaranteed that Lowell, Baldelli, Kotsay, or Drew will go down sometime during the season. That's where Wilkerson (a lefty that hits lefties well) will step in and hopefully step up.

Boston Signs Brad Wilkerson
Tony Massarotti is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have signed outfielder/first baseman Brad Wilkerson to a minor league deal. The deal is worth a base salary of $400,000, but could be worth up to $1.5 million if he reached all the incentives in the deal. Last year with the Mariners and Blue ...
Breaking Jason Varitek's psychological hold on the Red Sox
Yesterday, Pat discussed what the Jason Varitek signing means for the backup catcher position. Today, I look at the man himself, Jason Varitek. What does the return of Varitek mean for the club? Does it mean "more of the same?" No, I don't think it does. The actions of management over the last year have shown that the club is intent on shaking the psychological hold...

The dream of 9 league-average hitters is dead
Jason Varitek, you ended my dream. It may have been a long shot, but it's over. And although having you back at least fills the backstop, it does crush my desire to have nine league average hitters in the Red Sox lineup. Potentially now, eight of them, now that ain't bad. A lineup consisting of eight average or better hitters is actually very good, as long as some of...

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 2/4
We are now just two days away from Truck Day for the Boston Red Sox. It
may not feel like spring up here in New England but Truck Day for us
here cancels out what the groundhog said because it means spring
training is near. In fact, it's just 8 days until pitchers and catchers
report to Ft. Myers. That is unless you're Jon Lester, then you are already there.
