Posted by Lionel on June 3, 2009.With last night's game fresh in our minds, let's take a quick gander at the Cubs offseason pitching moves:
Aaron Heilman for Ronny Cedeno and Garrett Olson-Heilman took the loss last night, making him 2-3 on the season with a 5.09 ERA. The Cubs parted ways with Cedeno because they signed Aaron Miles. Makes sense...get rid of a guy who can play the 4, 5, or 6 spot to get a guy who can't play third. Hmmmm...now we've seen how many guys try to play the 3 sack in ARam's absence? The silver lining is that Cedeno is only hitting .173. Olson has been the Mariner's swing man, starting 3 of his 7 appearances, with a 4.68 ERA. In other words, the Cubs traded a guy who has a 4.68 ERA and a potential fit at third for a guy with a 5.06 ERA.
Kevin Gregg for Jose Ceda-After last night, Gregg is 8 of 10 in the save department and has a 5.24 ERA. The only "good" news is that Jose Ceda was shut down for a few days in Spring Training and has yet to pitch. I guess the Marlins have a different idea of a few days.
Jason Marquis for Luis Vizcaino-Most of you know how the latter portion of this trade went, but the Rockies are happy with the Marquis for nothing trade. Marquis is 7-3 with a 3.93 ERA. His .211 BA matches Geo Soto's.
Rich Hill for PTBNL-We're supposed to be excited about the fact that Rich Hill is doing well, and he is. He's 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 4 starts. Can't say much about who the Cubs got, because the Cubs don't know.
Michael Wuertz for Richie Robnett and Justin Sellers-This was a good one. Wuertz has a 2.59 ERA in 24 appearances for the A's. If he were with the Cubs, he'd have the best ERA among the relievers and be one of only three below 4. Justin Sellers was traded to the Dodgers for future considerations (i.e. most likely a small sum of money). Robnett was released by the Cubs this week after batting .175 between Iowa and Tennessee with a .555 OPS.

The Cubs Are Slumping and on the DL
Over the course of a 162 game season, even the best teams have slumps.
