PLAYERS: Bobby ScalesRyan Freel
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs

Posted by Lionel on May 28, 2009.

Bobby Scales trip back to Iowa was a short one...in fact, he never saw the cornfields. With Ryan Freel coming up with a strained hammy in the 4th inning yesterday (yes, there was more to yesterday's game than Mt. Z's eruption), the Cubs held Scales in Chicago while Freel was being evaluted. It is now believed the Cubs will D.L. Freel and recall Scales. For those interested in the rules of this situation, a player who is sent to the minors must stay in the minors for at least 10 days. But there is an exception to the rule that allows a team to recall a player in less than 10 days if there is an injury that requires a player to go on the D.L., as in this case.

Zambrano Suspended 6 Games For Tirade

Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano was suspended for six games by Major League Baseball on Thursday for his tirade this week during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Carlos Zambrano Throws Ump out of the Game

The Chicago Cubs have not gotten off the great start that they may have hoped for. But it is baseball and that means the season will last another eight months. Nonetheless, for a day at least the Cubs appear to have righted a sinking ship. Of course the man who helped to bring the spark was none other than the fiery Carlos Zambrano.Check out how Zambrano's actions get the Chicago...

Roster Moves Aplenty

Posted by Lionel on May 27, 2009.Wow. I decided to check the Cubs website before the start of today's action just to review the standings after last night when I was blindsided by roster moves. Let's take a look at the 6 players affected. Off the 25 Man Aaron Miles-Miles was put on the 15 day D.L., retroactive all the way back to yesterday, with what's being called...

Video: Carlos Zambrano Ejected After Bumping Umpire, Beats Up Gatorade

Carlos Zambrano has a well-deserved reputation as a hot head. The fiery character was in typical form on Wednesday afternoon during the Cubs/Pirates game. With the Cubs leading 2-1 in the Top 7th, Zambrano threw a wild pitch that allowed Nyjer Morgan to score the game-tying run. Zambrano felt that he had covered the plate to prevent Morgan from scoring, but Nyjer was called safe...

Rumor Mill Starting to Churn

Posted by Lionel on May 27, 2009.It seemed like the sleepy baseball writers and reporters were caught off guard last week when the Jake Peavy to the White Sox deal popped up, so now they are all scrambling to start some rumors, even if they are absurd...Obviously, the first rumor out there is that the Cubs will try to go after Jake Peavy. The Daily Herald gave some thoughts on this...

Lou Takes Out Anger On Cubs Travel Secretary, Cubs Still Lose

The Cubs have been slumping lately.  It’s not even that one or two players can’t hit, the whole team has just completely shorted out at the plate.  Don’t fear, Cubs fans.  Lou Piniella will use his powers of anger and frustration to fix our hitting woes.  Here’s the plan: While reporters were in the clubhouse interviewing [...]

Great Quotes Following Big Z’s Eruption

Zambrano’s ejection was nothing new from the volatile ace.  We’ve seen fights with teammates, Red Bull-fueled tantrums, and screaming matches with whatever or whomever he’s talking to when he yells at the sky.  About a week after hearing he was demonstrative toward umps and teammates in his rehab start, Z was tossed yesterday. The explosion after the [...]

Down by One, Two On and No Outs...Twice - Cubs 1 Dodgers 2

Game Forty-Six - Cubs 1 Dodgers 2 WP - Randy Wolf (3-1) LP - Randy Wells (0-2) Save - Ramon Troncoso (3) Lou Piniella's crew dropped back to .500 on the season after failing to capitalize in the eighth and ninth innings on Thursday night. Randy Wolf held the Cubs' offense in check and had a five-hit shutout through seven innings. Bobby Scales pinch hit for Mike Fontenot...

Red State Blue State

The escalating crybaby tantrums that so poignantly characterize the 2009 Chicago Cubs are about as interesting to me as reading People Magazine's cover story on Bristol Palin and her five-month old child.  Still, I admit: they're both fun to look at.Carlos Zambrano lost his cool again?  Ya don't say.  If he's not cussing himself out on the mound he's throwing...

Deep Thoughts On The Chicago Cubs

I have been busy as hell with studying for the Bar lately, so I haven’t had a whole lot of time to comment on the Cubs current situation.  It’s not that the 8-game losing streak isn’t a big deal, but how they’ve lost has been painful to watch.  Here are a few thoughts regarding the [...]

A Trip Around the Minors

Posted by Lionel on May 29, 2009.Jake Fox comes off the ATAtM board, Josh Vitters is hot, and my bitching finally pays off... IowaSteve Clevenger-Welcome to Iowa. After weeks of my bitching about why the Cubs had their two best catching prospects on the same team, the Cubs finally promoted Clevenger. It was a well-deserved promotion, as he was hitting .364 with a .443 OBP and an...

Baseball In The Daytime: May 29 2009

Friday brings us a pair of day games. That's right, folks, the final weekday is not, repeat not, the sole domain of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs are still here, but they're joined by a game to be played in Arlington, Texas. That town sounds goofy, it must be made up.So join in, ranch hands and milk maids, for another edition of Baseball In The Daytime--where we take our national...

Chicago Cubs Lose Another Starter To Injury: Gatorade Cooler Put On the DL

The Chicago Cubs have dealt with a number of injuries so far this season and the club was just dealt another blow. Carlos Zambrano's tirade in Wednesday's game ended with an assault on the Gatorade cooler in the Cubs' dugout. MOUTHPIECESPORTS personality Sarah Spain caught up with a few of the players to get their reaction to another fallen teammate.

Dontrelle Willis Needed This!

He needed to step onto that mound at Comerica Park and feel the evening sun shine upon him, the clouds in retreat, the swirling winds at bay. He needed to kick his right leg high into the air and bring his left arm across his body in perfect plane as the baseball left his fingertips with a sizzle. He needed this, and so did we. Once upon a time Dontrelle Wayne Willis was an...

Cubs Down on the Farm Report - 05/28/09

Here is your mid-week update for our Young Cubs. This was one heck of a busy beginning to the week for call-ups; of course the big one was Jake Fox getting called up to Chicago from Iowa. Bobby Scales was sent back down to Iowa on Wednesday but appears to be headed back to Chicago with Ryan Freel going on the DL. Josh Vitters was named Midwest League Player of the Week on Tuesday...
