Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals designated Luis Hernandez for assignment to make room for the newly-acquired Ryan Freel. Hernandez, a 25-year-old utilityman, hit .204/.235/.204 in 53 plate appearances for the Royals this year. He spent parts of two seasons with the Orioles before signing a minor league deal with Kansas City before the season.

The Chicago Cubs have traded utilityman Ryan Freel to the Kansas City Royals for a player to be named.
The 33-year-old Freel started the year with Baltimore and later was traded to the Cubs. He's been injured this season and was batting .140 overall when Monday's trade was made.
