After pitching 2 1/3 innings of relief just last night, the Red Sox were not asking for extended innings from Michael Bowden on Monday night. Unfortunately, seven hits and seven runs over three innings wasn't quite what they had in mind.
It was the rain that eventually stopped the bleeding in the seventh during the rain-shortened loss to the Blue Jays, 11-5. The bullpen, which gave up another four runs in the next two innings, was certainly in no shape to apply any tourniquet. Youn lefty Hunter Jones gave up all four of those additional runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
Missing Mike Lowell, Hideki Okajima, and tonight's scheduled starter Josh Beckett, all due to nagging injuries, the Red Sox bats managed to save some face, as Kevin Youkilis launched two bombs and David Ortiz added another, brining his total for the season to 28.

Tie Clinched
The LA Angels did the heavy lifting for the Red Sox last night, whacking the Texas Rangers 11-0, to win the AL West title and giving the Red Sox a tie for the AL Wild Card. It was a rare night I was pulling for the Halos, and something I sure as hell won't be doing next week.Josh Beckett couldn't go last night, as an upper back spasm forced Terry Francona to pull him earlier...
Spot Start
Michael Bowden starts in place of Josh Beckett against the Blue Jays, and gives up four runs in the first inning. Aaron Hill continues his amazing power season with his 35th home run, and Wells and Overbay doubled. An early evening Red Sox loss would give the Texas Rangers an even bigger reason [...]
Laundry List: Lowell's Hip, Kotchman's Bat
Two items for today's laundry list:
1)Hope that Lowell's hip heals
2)Pray to Pedro Serrano's voodoo gods (yeah, that crazy guy from "Major League") that if he doesn't, Casey Kotchman's bat will rise from its slumber.
Mike Lowell came into this season on the heels of a revolutionary labrum surgery, one so new that it is yet to be named (that...
Jays swamp Red Sox
At some point, a young pitcher is given an opportunity. Last night, Michael Bowden got his.
Game 156 Recap/Game 157 Preview
TOR – 403 220 0 – 11 – 14 – 0PAW – 201 001 1 – 5 – 7 – 0A friend who is a NASCAR fan tells of the “vortex theory.” This theory says that the cars driving around the track continually and at high speed create a vortex that keeps inclement weather away. Under that theory there is no reason the rain should have come to Fenway as both clubs had people streaking...
Blue Jays delay Red Sox’s playoff clincher
BOSTON (AP) -The Toronto Blue Jays took advantage after Josh Beckett was scratched from his scheduled start, scoring seven runs off substitute Michael Bowden to beat the Boston Red Sox 11-5 Monday night in a game that was called in the seventh inning because of rain.
The Trades You Don't Make, Counterpoint
A look back, in the wake of Michael Bowden's start last night (and to be fair it did follow a recent relief outing followed by two weeks or more of inconsistent usage) and Jason Varitek's recent 7-for-7 debacle against the Yankees: The Diamondbacks, who would like another starting pitcher, continue...
REMEMBER THE MAGIC NUMBER IS ONE
Last night as I was perusing my Facebook feed I noticed a disproportionate number of my Red Sox fans complaining about the Red Sox game last night. In case you were like most of us and skipped it, you missed Josh Beckett missing a start and saw instead the craptastically ineffective performance of one Michael Bowden. The Blue Jays spanked the Sox all over the place, but please remember, the Wild
Red Sox Wild Card win: Celebration deserved but ill-timed
Point 1: If you're among those that think celebrating a Wild Card berth in the Major League Baseball playoffs is unwarranted, you're wrong.Eight out of 30 teams make the playoffs, just under 27%. When compared to the NHL or NBA where nearly half the league makes it in, it seems a lot more difficult by comparison. If you're among those that still think it's easy, you...
