I can only hope that, after last night's win in the Helldome, Hideki Okajima and Paps took Jacoby Ellsbury out on the town for prime rib and hookers. Because the young man's otherwordly snag of a sinking pop fly with one out and the bases loaded and the Sox clinging to a 7-4 lead, was a game-saving thing of awkward beauty. Watching the replays, I still can't comprehend exactly how he ended up with the ball in his hands when all was said and done. But I know that if it got by him, you might as well have dropped it into the Negative Zone. There would have been ample time for all three baserunners and the entire brass section of the New York Philharmonic to cross the plate, my foot would have gone clean through the flatscreen, and the Ghost of Mike Timlin would have been busy crafting some cement loafers for Oki. This was a series I'd been dreading, but having seen game one, I like the way the next two stack up. Tampa Bay looked like a team that may have included the to...

BJ Upton is a Better Fielder Than Jacoby Ellsbury
I'm watching the Rays-Red Sox game on ESPN and Jacoby Ellsbury takes away a sure triple from BJ Upton on a line drive to left center. The next thing I hear is "Jacoby Ellsbury should win a gold glove this year."
This is not true, because he is not even the best center fielder in the game he was playing in today.

The catch? Thing of beauty
Jacoby Ellsbury knew that if he didn’t make the play, that might be it. He could envision the ball rolling away, could envision Jason Bartlett rounding the bases, could envision the Red Sox losing the game. All on one play. And perhaps it’s a play that he wouldn’t have made in past years, but one that ...

Ellsbury, Homers Help Red Sox Defeat Sonnanstine, Sliding Rays

At this same time last year—the beginning of September, the season’s final month—the Tampa Bay Rays consistently sold-out crowd was raucous and intensely intrigued by their playoff-bound team. At this time this year, when looking throughout their...
Sox Win In The Dome, As Few Care
In front of a half-filled Tropicana Dome last night (and that's a disgrace considering how important this series is for the Rays), many of whom were Red Sox fans, Jon Lester pitched six solid innings and Jacoby Ellsbury made two spectacular catches as the Red Sox opened a seven-game road trip with an 8-4 win.The Red Sox had their hot bats on display as Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay...

Returning the Stolen Base to Baseball Prominence (Part IV)
Part IV in a series.
If you've read my first two articles, "The Stolen Base: A Lost Art. Will we ever see a 100 Steal Man Again?" and "Gimmie Five! Dexter "The Prowler" Fowler Steals Five Bases in a Game," then you know I am a fan of the stolen base and an advocate of its return to baseball prominence.
