Though the World Baseball Classic was underway, I chose to watch the Chicago Cubs spring training game. Any player of any significance was playing in the World Baseball Classic. Nobody even had a chance of making the opening day squad.Talk about a sleeper!Speaking of which, for those that do not know, I was having trouble sleeping. My body was sore and overall, I felt pretty poor. That is, until I went to a Florida sleep study center. I explained my situation with the time constraints. They listened to what I had to say and worked with me. I was tested and the results were analyzed. I was put through a customized and comprehensive sleep study that was carefully designed and structured for me.Within a few days, I had a machine in my home and was using it. I was able to return to work and take the equipment with me. I am already feeling better as a result. They helped me increase my productive sleep and improve sound sleep practices. Effective therapy for sleep related disorders can h...

Wait, Who Is Angry With Zambrano For Asking For A New Stadium?
Zambrano made some ill-advised comments this weekend about Wrigley Field. After seeing how nice the new Yankee Stadium was, Big Z had this to say:
“You come into a ballpark like this and you see great
things,” the Cubs ace told The Associated Press on Saturday before his
team’s 10-1 exhibition loss at the sparkling ballpark in the Bronx.
“You wish that Chicago...
MLB Preview
The 2009 baseball season is upon us, and it's time for some thoughts on the 6 months of summer action to come. Can the Rays compete in the 2009 AL East? (Photo: Brian Cassella)Most interesting pennant race: AL East. Typically the traditional Red Sox vs. Yankees slugfest, the emergence of the Rays last year left the Yankees out of the playoffs. Can a retooled Yankees team (Teixeira...
Ode To A Locker
THOU still unravish’d space of cliche quotes,
Thou foster-child of fastballs and frustration,
Sylvan closer of games, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than your 20 K’s:
What glass-arm’d legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Hohokam or the dales of Wrigleyville?
What men or gods are...
Opening Day Thoughts
Opening day was just as amazing as I thought it would be. Here’s a few things that jumped out at me from the Cubs game and around the league.
CUBS
Soriano had a great game, launching the second pitch into the stands. Maybe this guy will be okay hitting leadoff.
2-3-4 (Fukudome, Lee, Bradley) in the order looked [...]
Spring Training exposes Cubs Draft Success
Posted by Lionel on April 5, 2009.While most people focus on the final 25 man roster, there is a lot going on on the minor league fields. As the big league teams get ready to break camp, so to do the minor leaguers, meaning that there are some inevitable cuts from the organization. As such, the Cubs made 10 cuts in the past week. Among them...Ryan Harvey-Harvey was the 6th overall...
OPENING DAY!!!
Whether you’re a North Sider or a South Sider, this day has been a long time coming. Every winter seems so long, waiting for the new season to start. Not that I don’t love football and the NBA, but there’s something magical about baseball season.
It’s a new year for everyone. From the Cubs down to [...]
Cubs Pitchers Are At It Again
The very first post I wrote for Sox & Dawgs last May was on practical jokes in baseball specifically a few that were covered by This Week in Baseball. In one of those segments, Chicago Cubs reliever Ryan Dempster and some other Cubs were seen putting another teammates Escalade up on blocks and puttin...
Chicago Cubs Opening Day
To dream the impossible dreamTo fight the unbeatable foeTo bear with unbearable sorrowTo run where the brave dare not goOK, it's been a LONG offseason. We lost the great writings of Cub Town and all of the Baseball Toaster. The Cubs lost the playoff series with the Dodgers in less than impressive fashion. And we still seem to have Alfonso Soriano leading off (OK, at least...
The Facts of Life
I happened to find Barry Rozner’s piece today just a little bit ago and as I began reading I was actually thrilled. Then I kept reading and wasn’t so thrilled. Nonetheless, there is some good in this article and there is some bad.
You take the good
A moment of silence, please, for the departed DeRosa, who was declared a Hall of Famer the minute he left the Chicago...

How Close was Peavy to Wearing Pinstripes?
Posted by Lionel on April 4, 2009.Jake Peavy was almost a Cub. We all heard the rumors all winter long. But just how close was it? Well, according to Baseball Tonight, this close (imagine I in holding my thumb and forefinger about about 3 millimeters apart). Buster Olney reported that Kevin Towers told him that the Cubs and Peavy's agent were discussing deferred payments to make...

Average Ticket Price Up 5.4 Percent in MLB. Yankees/Mets Skew Total
Team Marketing Report has released details on their forthcoming Fan Cost Index and average ticket pricing reports, and with it, the league will see a decidedly “New York” hue to the overall pricing for tickets, concessions, and merchandise at the ballpark this year. Based on season-ticket prices and TMR’s weighted system, the Yankees’ average ticket is an eye-popping $72...
Projecting the 2009 Cubs: the final one
For these team projections I've used the playing time projections that we put together. The statistics for the hitters are from the 2009 Shawon's, which are based on the following projections: Marcel, Chone, PECOTA, and ZiPS. The pitching stats (FIP) are the average of those same 4 projection systems. The defense for most of the players was a 3-year weighted UZR average...
So what if Neal Cotts is the only LOOGY?
There’s been some discussion this offseason and this spring about who the Cubs LOOGY will be. We’ve had the discussions on here. I was hopeful the Cubs would acquire one of Beimel, Shouse or Ohman in the offseason. Neal Cotts isn’t that good a pitcher and you could probably improve over him. That being said, we’re talking about 50 or so innings of work...
