The Cubs placed catcher Geovany on the 15-day DL today with an oblique strain, retroactive to last Tuesday. Soto suffered the inujury taking batting prractice before Tuesday's game at Wrigley Field.
It appears that Soto's injury is worse than orginialy thought, and he could be out until some time in August. And with the way oblique strains can affect hitting, he might not be back even then.
I can't say this for sure, but I think it's fairly likely that the Cubs put in a waiver claim on catcher Chris Coste, who was put on waivers by the Phillies on Wednesday. That's why no corresponding roster move was made when Soto was placed on the DL today. The Cubs expected/hoped to acquire Coste off waivers. Unfortunately for the Cubs, Coste was also claimed by the Houston Astros, and because the Astros have a worse record than the Cubs, they would win a waiver claim.
Which puts the Cubs back to Square One...
They can either bring up a catcher from Iowa (probably Chris Robinson), or try and make a trade for a veteran catcher, which might take a while to execute.
