Soto
The Cubs announced today that they will be placing catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain, retroactive to last Wednesday. Soto suffered the injury taking batting practice before Wednesday's game at Wrigley Field. It appears that Soto's injury is worse than orginally thought, and he could be out until some time in August. And with the way oblique strains can affect hitting, he might not be back even then. I can't say this for sure, but I think it's fairly likely that the Cubs put in a waiver claim on C-1B-3B Chris Coste, who was placed on waivers by the Phillies on Wednesday. Jim Hendry must have been almost downright giddy when he saw Coste's name come through eBIS (MLB's in-house computer system) on the daily waiver list just hours after Soto went down with an injury. That's why the Cubs were waiting to place Soto on the DL. They expected (hoped) to acquire Coste Friday afternoon when the 47-hour waiver ride was over, an...

Chris Coste released, claimed by Astros

The writing was on the wall. Chris Coste had to know that the Phillies, who were keeping three catchers on their roster for some inexplicable reason, were eventually going to get rid of him. Coste hadn't started a game since June 27th and was relegated to pinch hitting duty, getting only two at-bats so far in July. He had to know that, sooner or later, he was going to be on...

Report: Chris Coste designated for assignment

The 36-year-old catcher will write a new chapter in his long and storied career, which will begin in earnest with the Houston Astros, according to a report. In four seasons with the Phillies, the veteran catcher hit .282/.339/.440 with 23 homers, making a name for himself as a 33-year-old rookie who defied the odds and exceeded expectations by becoming a solid option for the Phils...

According to Scott Lauber (via...

Jayson Werth Joins All-Star Team, Chris Coste Joins Astro Team

Jayson Werth was added to the All-Star game, as an injury replacement. Werth's addition means all three Phillies' starting outfielders are on the All-Star team. Werth was a worthy candidate, and his ability to play center field was likely needed on the roster. Watching Ryan Braun play center would be enjoyable, but this game COUNTS, so Manager Charlie Manuel needs some positional...
