Hirsh was Houston's top overall prospect coming into 2006 and has done nothing to disappoint since. He's 13-2 with a 2.13 ERA at Triple-A Round Rock. He's pitching tonight which means a Saturday start would still put him on regular rest.
It was thought that if Clemens did not return to the team this season, Hirsh might have been called up earlier. The Rocket signed though and a seemingly ready Jason Hirsh was left to toy with batters in Triple-A, where it looked like the Astros were comfortable leaving him for the remainder of the season. An erratic staff and a sense of urgency seems to have changed the minds of the Astros front office people who now probably see Jason Hirsh as their best available option to start every five days.
He's walking more batters this year than he has in the past (51 BB in 135 innings), but it hasn't effected him on the mound. It could make for an ugly outing or two though at the major league level where jams are harder to get out of. He most likely won't make a run like Weaver or Liriano to start his career, but he could be a quality pitcher down the stretch for the Astros and fantasy teams.
