It was only two years ago that Erik Bedard was thought of as one of the best pitchers in the American League. Everyone remembers that the Mariners, in an act of desperation, gave up Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, and more to acquire Bedard from the Orioles. The Mariners, and many baseball folks, really believed at the time that Bedard was on the fast track to becoming one of the best pitchers in baseball. In two seasons with the Mariners, Bedard pitched pretty well, but he could not avoid the injury bug. In 2008, Bedard did not pitch after July 4th. And yesterday the Mariners announced that Bedard was to undergo shoulder surgery and probably will miss the remainder of the season. Now, Erik Bedard's future is cloudy. Bedard will be a free agent after this season and his value on the open market is somewhat undefined. There is no doubt that Bedard can pitch very effectively, but what no one knows is whether or not he can stay healthy for a full season. this offseason should have been the o...

Bedard: Torn labrum, out four to six months

The Mariners just released the results of Erik Bedard's surgery in Southern California today, and it's a whopper: Dr. Lewis Yocum found an inflamed bursa and a torn labrum. Dr. Yocum debrided the bursa and repaired the labrum, and the Mariners report that Bedard will be in a sling for two to three weeks. It will be four to six months before he is able to begin baseball-related activity...

Erik Bedard's Season to End With Surgery on Friday

When the Seattle Mariners sent five players to the Baltimore Orioles last February to land Erik Bedard they did so with the intent of having Bedard help them win the AL West. Instead in his two seasons as a Mariner, Bedard has made $14.75 million to make thirty starts while Adam Jones is a budding superstar for the Orioles.Needless to say, it hasn't been the greatest trade for the Mariners, and

Erik Bedard to have surgery Friday

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu just told us Erik Bedard will undergo exploratory surgery on the bursa complex in his left shoulder on Friday. No wored on whether he'd be able to pitch again in a best case scenario, but realistically, his season is done. Dr. Lewis Yocum will probe the area to see whether or not there is anything structurally wrong with Bedard's bursa sac area. The...

Mariners Injury News

Erik Bedard’s doctors found a torn labrum and fixed it, and he should be ready to throw in spring training. We just don’t know who will sign him. Adrian Beltre does not need surgery: Beltre severely bruised his right testicle when he was hit by a ground ball on Wednesday. He has been told [...]

Odds & Ends: Bedard, Rays, Hall, Brewers

A few more loose links I rounded up... Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik told Geoff Baker of The Seattle Times that he "has not ruled out offering some type of extension deal to injured pitcher Erik Bedard." Of course, the club will monitor Bedard's recovery from shoulder surgery before doing anything. The Rays have signed fourth rounder Luke Bailey for $750K according to Baseball America...

An article on torn labrums that should frighten Erik Bedard

Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, in Slate, details the horrors of a torn labrum, which he calls "baseball's most fearsome injury." The article is from 2004, but I don't think much has changed from a medical standpoint. This is simply the worst injury a pitcher can endure.

Mariners GM Zduriencik: Bedard extension possible, but team will monitor recovery first

Ken Griffey Jr., in the photo above, does his impression of Ichiro's batting ritual. Ichiro doesn't look very impressed. Spoke to Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik a few moments ago and he told me the team has not ruled out offering some type of extension deal to injured pitcher Erik Bedard. But first, he said, the team will have to monitor his recovery and see how things go. "He just...

Appearance on Mariners BP on FSN

Got done a little while ago taping an appearance on the new FSN show Mariners BP where we discussed the Erik Bedard and Adrian Beltre injuries as well as my blog post this morning on the future of beat writing and the newspaper industry. That segment will air in a few moments if you want to tune in. An interesting television concept they're trying. Check it out.
