The Inequity of Being Black

As the media expresses its surprise that Roger Clemens was not on President Bush's latest pardon list, the denigration of Barry Bonds continues, with the Giants essentially removing all record of the fact that Bonds indeed played for the team. On the Clemens front, I thought you actually had to be convicted of a crime to be pardoned, but maybe the Bush administration changed that law too. That's another story though.

Anyway, I think what the Giants are doing is a disgrace. For 15 years, Bonds was a loyal servant who filled the seats, thrilled the fans, and made the Club hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars. And now, because he is implicated in what is widely considered an era-wide problem, the Giants are pretending like he never existed.

Bonds is no saint, but it's just sad that the world we live in is no different than the "game" portrayed by cops, junkies (and others) in HBO's critically acclaimed series The Wire. The only difference is that those of us who don't live on the streets aren't so violent with the moves we make in the game. It's all the same though.

Sports fans deserve more credit than this, and Giants ownership should be ashamed of themselves. Perhaps they'll realize this after their Gross Receipts for 2008 roll in and they're considerably less than they were during the last 15 years with Bonds at the helm. That's when they'll call Bonds next year, and bring him back for a Fan Appreciation Day where they can retire his number. And like every loyal servant, Bonds will probably abide. Or maybe he won't...

Anytime I have a discussion about Barry Bonds I have to open with the fact that he is the reason why new terms for a-hole keep being invented - he is an a-hole beyond what our language can capture. He is such an a-hole that bigots forget he is black. Having said that -

I have always believed that the Clemens angle in the Mitchell report was a way to get Roger to be the token white steroid perp that allows the govt to go after Bonds with full force having removed the race card from the deck. 2 things happened on their way to trial -1) Roger didn't fall on his sword like a good 'ol white boy and 2) Roger was into steroids way deeper than anybody expected. Because of this, Roger has to go down and it is his own fault. The racial inequity was that the white guy had a choice and the black guy didn't.

You're right, but don't kid yourself. Clemens is as much of an a-hole as Bonds. I don't think there's any doubt about that. He took his a-holeness to the field (Mike Piazza), which is something Bonds never did.

I agree completely Rofman. The Giants had no problem cashing in last year on Bonds and the record, for them to do this shows this team sometimes lacks that "big picture" vision. They recently said they wanted them down to show fans how they are starting over to show a new beginning, yet they still have Dave Roberts, Ray Durham, Omar Vizquel, Aurilia, etc. And the only reason they had some rookies start was due to injuries. I know Barry was an A Hole, but how many players, when they come up to bat, actually have fans running from the beer booth back to their seats like he did? I hate the Raiders but at least they stand by their thugs....errrrr, players and sort of embrace their stupid...ohhh, traditions. I'm going off on a tangent. My bad
