Former Mets GM Steve Phillips chimes in on the possibility of trading Jonathan Papelbon: "I think if Papelbon is available, and I think he will be, I think there will be a significant market for him and the teams will really step up," he said on WEEI on Tuesday. "When you look at the Bobby Jenkses of the world who might be available via trade, and guys like that ... Papelbon stands out as a difference-maker." Sure, Papelbon is a difference maker. His performance as the Red Sox closer since 2006 has been phenomenal. However, I have no idea where Phillips is coming from saying that there will be a significant market for Papelbon. The only teams that would be willing to take on Papelbon and the $9 or so million that he will make in arbitration are teams with high payrolls. Here is the list of teams with payrolls exceeding $90 million in 2009 and their potential closing situation for 2010:Cardinals: Ryan FranklinBraves: ?????White Sox: Jenks (or Thornton)Mariners: Aa...

  • What a foolish notion, he is a premier closer and the Sox have already taken huge steps backwards, why take one more. It's no fun for my Yankees to beat them if they suck.
  • Lol I agree with you on that one, it would not be as fun to beat em' if they sucked.

I still LIKE Jonathan Papelbon. There. I said it.

Yes, Papelbon blew a save at the worst possible moment.  He went from the guy who HAD NEVER allowed a post season run to score...to the guy who allowed all of them to.  He seemed to have no command of the strike zone and therefore, he was leaving balls right in the middle of the strike zone.  It was a bad night....when we needed him most.  It was brutal to watch...especially...

Steve Phillips Is Still Clueless About Jonathan Papelbon

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read this comment from Steve Phillips chat yesterday:Oliver (Germany): If there's any truth in the Jonathan Papelbon trade rumours, whocould be a potential fit for the Red Sox. In my opinion this couls only be a playoff contender in need of a great closer with high salary demands (and a lousy closer right now). The Cubs? The White Sox? The Rays...

Sunday Bloody Sunday - Fear and Loathing in a Brief Postseason: Rise of the Execrable Phoenix – No Shows, Show-Offs, & Big Money – 2009: Year of the Weird is Affirmed

Jonathan Papelbon's 9th Inning on Sunday was like a bad dream. (AP Photo)It almost happened again, and like the big dumb animal in which I’ve become, I reacted in the same matter I always have. I cursed, turned off, and...

Halo A Hit!

The man who'll give Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon plenty of nightmares this off-season gets top billing in our POTD. Vladimir Guerrero drove in the tying and winning runs in the ninth inning Sunday as the Los Angeles Angels came from behind to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6 to win its American League Division Series in three straight games.  That earns the Angels a date...

Red Sox Rumors: Bay, Baldelli, Papelbon

Boston's season may have ended prematurely, but that just means the New England hot stove fires up sooner. Here's some notes from Amalie Benjamin of The Boston Globe and Joe McDonald of The Providence Journal: To no one's surprise, Jason Bay indicated that he'll dip his toe in the free agent waters, saying he'd be doing himself "a disservice...

Another Reason Why I'm Picking The Yanks In Five

Brian Fuentes has yet to blow up: Jonathan Papelbon has lots of time to refine his Riverdance after giving it up to the Angels in Game 3. Huston Street had two out in the ninth and couldn't finish the Phillies. Joe Nathan, who usually dismisses school, got his own bell rung by Alex Rodriguez. Ryan Franklin thought he had notched a save for the Cardinals, but a swarm of white...

Dustin Pedroia: 'Our infield (stinks)'

I hate Jonathan Papelbon the most, Kevin Youkilis second-most, but next on the Red Sox would have to be Dustin Pedroia. (List does not include Curt Schilling who sits atop this list by a long shot...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...
