PLAYERS: Todd Jones
TEAMS: Detroit Tigers

Todd "Hammer" Jones (we aren't sure how official that nickname is, but we heard it once and think it's perfect) was unable to close the game out for the Detroit Tigers, which eventually led to a 7-6, 11th inning loss to Minnesota. Besides the obvious ill-effects it had on the win-loss column, his inadequacies on the mound had an even greater reach. Chuck Douglas Booth, a 31-year-old baseball from Vancouver, had his Guiness record ruined by the Hammer's performance. According to the Detroit Free Press, Booth had been attempting to see games in all 30 major league stadiums in 26 days. The record requires that Booth see every pitch of the game, and Thursday's schedule was to include an afternoon game in Detroit followed by a night game in Cleveland. Because the Tigers' game ended at 5:15pm, he was unable to make the 7:05pm start time in Cleveland. "It happens," Booth said. "It's baseball." Interpretation: We knew what to expect when the Hammer took the ball in the ninth.

Tearing Down Tiger Stadium

As Yankee Stadium begins its final months of use, including hosting its final All Star game, there will be a lot of reflection of the great moments not just in baseball, but in sports that have taken place in one of sports' greatest stages. From Don Larsen's perfect game to the 1958 NFL Championship dubbed the greatest game ever when the Baltimore Colts defeated the N.Y...

The plans for Ryan Perry

The Tigers officially announced the signing of first round draft pick Ryan Perry yesterday. In the conference call there was discussion about what Perry's next steps are as well as his role. Earlier reports indicated that Perry would likely be a September call-up. However, David Chadd indicated that wasn't really a consideration [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "...

Age catching up to Jones

It looks like father time is starting to catch up to Detroit Tigers closer Todd Jones. Manager Jim Leyland has recently said that he plans on cutting the work load of the 40-year old pitcher. To many this is no surprise, Jones has never been a great closer but he has been pretty effective usually getting the job done, but over the past four seasons we've seen his ERA go on a...

That's 21st Century Baseball...

I was fortunate enough to meet Ernie Harwell on his first farewell tour of major league baseball parks. Interleague play had created one of those harmonic convergences in the schedule where the Tigers got to come to Atlanta and play the Braves. Of course, being in local television at the time I absolutely, positively, without remorse or hesitation had to have him for a feature...

Game 92: Tigers at Twins

PREGAME: Those of you who believe in momentum may have had your beliefs shaken after yesterday's gut-wrencher. Armando Galarraga faces the one team that he seems to struggle the most with, the Twins. He's managed to last 6 innings in each of his starts, but his 10:8 K:BB ratio in 18 innings [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Game 92: Tigers at Twins", url: "...

Game 94: Twins at Tigers

PREGAME: The Tigers limp into the All Star break physically and spiritually. The Twins have taken 5 straight from the Tigers and a 4 game sweep would certainly suck hard. The match-up is Justin Verlander and Nick Blackburn. If you want a little something different, the Future's Game starts at 12:30 and it [...]SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Game 94: Twins at Tigers"...
