(by Anthony Wilson) On June 19, after an appearance in Nationals Park against the Blue Jays, Ron Villone was cruising along as the Nationals best reliever. He worked 0.1 innings that day without giving up a run (though he did walk a guy and gave up a hit) and reduced his season ERA to 1.77. In a bullpen that can be best described as miserable -- more like moribund -- Villone was one of the few bright spots. So, what happened to Ron Villone?

Nationals DFA Julian Tavarez

MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports the Nationals have designated right-hander Julian Tavarez for assignment.  Tavarez, a true journeyman at this point in his career, had a 4.89 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP in 35 innings with the Nats.  He's 35, but a club desperate for bullpen depth might decide to give him a shot.  Either that, or he'll end up back at Washington's Triple-A...

Learning from Ted Lilly

You might look at that headline and wonder what you could learn from a guy who was punished by a white-hot offense. The Phillies absolutely played t-ball against him last night in their 10-1 victory. Ted Lilly allowed seven earned runs over four innings of work against an unforgiving offense that won’t stop raking.  However, it’s [...]

Good, Bad & Ugly: Nationals Lose To Mets; Olsen Out For Season

WASHINGTON -- To say the Mets are playing with a Triple-A lineup right now is an insult to Triple-A baseball. There are teams in the International League who can hit better than the Mets did Tuesday. With Gary Sheffield still...

Martin is no match for Hernandez, Mets

The Washington Nationals have lost 66 of 92 games this season - or 40 more than they've won - after Monday's 6-2 loss to the New York Mets. To avoid losing 100 games for the second straight year, they would have to play four games over .500 the rest of the season. That crushing load of losses doesn't come without the predictable defeats, nights when the matchups and probabilities...
