The Pirates' 2009 campaign finally ended on Sunday, and they came as close to 100 losses as humanly possible, finishing with a 62-99 record.Sunday was a virtual microcosm of the entire season: 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position, 13 men left on base, and seven pitchers, including a starter (Jeff Karstens) that went 2 1/3 innings. Well after this last week of 2009 Cubs baseball, a week that included a double-header sweep by the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field the day after the Cubs were eliminated from even sniffing the playoffs, there's really only one thing to do.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest on the Pirates, in articles found here and here.
Kovacevic says the Pirates "do not plan to pursue a starting pitcher through free agency or trade this offseason." The Bucs figure to enter Spring Training next year with four rotation spots decided and many options for the last spot.
