I want to bring up the topic of Daniel Cabrera, our former Oriole, who was released by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. Well, it looks like the same problems that led to his release from Baltimore got worse in Washington, and he never seemed to improve at all.I know the complaints of him in Baltimore -- being a ten cent head, a lack of control, never developed, the walks, etc. -- but considering where he came from and the money he's made, I'd consider his life (not withstanding his baseball numbers) a success. There were times I thought he turned the corner (his start in New York at the end of the '06 season) and his solid two months in '08; however, he could never gain consistency, or learn the lessons from his solid to brilliant outings. We were all fooled at times into thinking that Cabrera could blossom, but also found himself lost. Simply, I don't think he ever learned how to pitch at all.>>> Read More

Game chat: Phillies, Nationals play the second

Cole Hamels gets the ball when the Phillies look to go 9-2 against Shairon Martis and the Washington Nationals. First pitch is 7:05. Tonight's focus: fielding. Is it any suprise that Washington, which had the worst record in baseball, is also the worst fielding team in the league? Defense counts, big time.

Phightin Phils Phorum - Phinally! Moyer Gets #250

It took 6 tries, but the Washington Nationals proved to be the magic potion for Jamie Moyer who today became the oldest major leaguer in history to record 250 wins.  Moyer is exactly 46 years and 194 days old today.  The only run Moyer surrendered in 6 innings of work this afternoon was a solo home run to Josh Willingham, who hit 2 on the day; the second was off reliever Clay Condrey...

Free Manny Acta!

The guy can manage. But now the Nats are 13-36, they cut Daniel Cabrera, they've probably used over 20 pitchers this season, their opening-day CF was sent to the minors, their budding star catcher is on the DL, and, well, they are a terrible baseball team. How bad?Bad enough that. . . they have three slow guys in the outfield -- Josh Willingham in left, Austin Kearns in center...

MASN may be the Nats' home network, but not on Twitter

(by Ian Koski) MASN may technically be the official network of the Washington Nationals, but you wouldn't know it if you follow it on Twitter. Of the 320 updates over the last nine days, only 43 were about the Nationals. A stunning 270 were about the Orioles. The tweets about the Nats'-O's series were clearly written from the Orioles' perspective.

In Defense of Liberty

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether Nationals Manager Manny Acta is stoic and unresponsive to the point of narcolepsy - he is. But you can't hold a manger responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted umpires. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole umpiring system? And if the whole umpiring system is guilty, then isn'...

Jamie Moyer wins 250th

Congratulations to Jamie Moyer, professional baseball’s Darryl Hammond, for earning win #250 against the Washington Nationals. Over six scoreless innings, the 46 year-old only allowed three hits en route to the Phillies’ 4-2 victory. In reaching this plateau, Moyer joins 43 others, only 10 of whom are lefthanders. Still, Moyer reached the 250-win plateau while [...]

Just Say No to Retreads

(by Jim Kurtzke) Getting to the core of what ails the Washington Nationals

Interview with Terrmel Sledge

Before the May 4th Fighters-Marines game in Chiba, I had an opportunity to chat with Terrmel Sledge for a few minutes. It was coming off of the crazy weekend where the Fighters had three extra-inning games in a row, two of which involved walkoff home runs. I realize the timing of posting this isn't so great as Sledge is currently rehabbing from a hamstring muscle strain, but...

Pitch count bugs Lannan

PHILADELPHIA | John Lannan is not a power pitcher. He knows he's not a power pitcher. He tells himself not to be a power pitcher. Sometimes, though, the Washington Nationals left-hander gets out of his game, tries to become something he's not and pays the price for it. Lannan did just that Sunday in a 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, a ballgame in which the 24-year...

Gamenight: Nationals (13-34) At Phillies (26-20)

Washington Nationals (13-34) at Philadelphia Phillies (26-20) Shairon Martis (5-0, 4.86 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (2-2, 4.86 ERA) Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia Weather: Sunny, 75 TV: Comcast SportsNet Twitter: Phillies Nation JA Happ threw an OK game against the Nationals, and though Washington made it close, the bullpen kept them down for the win. Now ace Cole [...]

Howard Goes Yard Twice; Bastardo Gets Call

It hasn’t been a good week for the Phillies. They dropped yet another series at home, losing two of three to the Florida Marlins before the Washington Nationals arrived. Then they learned that they’d be losing their statistically-best starting pitcher  for most or all of the season due to a frayed labrum. Overall, what should [...]

Nationals-Orioles: It Doesn’t Matter

So you know how the MASN Network has this new “Defining Moments” campaign for the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles? You know, the commercials where “fans” are giving “their” favorite defining moments from both clubs over recent years? Yeah. So here’s a defining moment for both clubs as they prepare to Battle for the Beltway, which is [...]

Nats on 1962 Mets Pace

Bill Chuck of Billy-Ball.com pointed out in his latest newsletter that the Washington Nationals are on pace with the infamous 1962 Mets. After last night the Nats are now one game better (13-35) than what the Mets were (12-36) in 1962. If you remember, the Detroit Tigers were on a similar bad pace in 2003. The [...]
