Today is the last off-day of the regular season. It feels a little disingenuous to call this "the last off-day," because we know that the Pirates will play on Tuesday and so Monday is also an off-day, but this is the last off-day of the 2013 regular season. I have a few thoughts that I wanted to share, and now seems like a good time.  The first is this: don't attach too much importance to this weekend's games. Obviously we all want that wild card game to be at PNC Park, for reasons boht stated (because the Pirates and Francisco Liriano are better there) ad unstated (there might only be one playoff game this year and it would really suck for there to not be a playoff game at PNC Park). The reality, though, is that all of the things that terrify us about one-game playoffs can also be applied back in the Pirates' favor, and that can happen whether the game is in Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. I don't really know if these three games even have any predictive pow...

The Final Series

The last weekend of the regular season is upon us, and the National League doesn’t have much left to settle in the playoff picture. We already know the participants: the Braves, Dodgers, Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds have already clinched the five spots. The seeds have yet to be determined, but any way you match them up, it’s going to be really good teams battling it out. There...

A Reason the Pirates are Right Where They Are

The Pirates have done us the favor of getting better gradually. Four years ago, they were absolutely dreadful. The next year, they were fine through July. The next year, they were fine through August. Now they’ve been good through September. We’ve been able to see the Pirates coming, to some extent, and so this 2013 success hasn’t taken us by complete surprise. We were prepared...

Game 159: Cubs 4 Pirates 2

In the course of about three hours this afternoon, the Pirates managed to more or less guarantee that they'll be in next Tuesday's wild card game, and prove why such a game is so terrifying.  What happened this afternoon was that the Pirates didn't hit very well (a recurring theme) and Francisco Liriano didn't quite have his best stuff. It seemed like that was...

Burnett goes eight solid innings in Pirates 4-1 win over Reds

Though nothing ever comes easy in the National League Central Division the Pirates simplified their path to home-field advantage in next week's wild-card game. They did so in multiple fashions. They took advantage of gift-wrapped base runners in the early innings. Later they resorted to power hitting. The diverse offensive approach combined with a solid start from A.J. Burnett...

Farnsworth grabs opportunity

Veteran right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth was a late season call up by the Pirates after signing a minor league deal and pitching at Triple A Indianapolis. Farnsworth's recent success bodes well for the Pirates, and he may be a valuable, addition to the bullpen. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Farnsworth recently.

Pirates fall to Cubs, blunting NL Central hopes

The Pittsburgh Pirates' hopes of catching up in the NL Central took a big hit Wednesday when Darnell McDonald launched a three-run homer, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 4-2 win. With three games remaining in the regular season for each team, the Pirates trail division-leading St. Louis by three games. The Pirates, who already have clinched a playoff spot, hold a one-game lead...

That Gerrit Cole is so hot right now

The Pirates have won 12 games in September. Five of them have been started by Gerrit Cole. The Pirates have lost 11 games in September. Zero of them have been started by Gerrit Cole. Here are Gerrit Cole's numbers in those five starts:  32 IP, 24 H, 39 K, 10 BB, 6 R, 6 ER, 1.69 ERA. Opponents are hitting .212/.276/.248 against him with a .324 BABIP, which means that we don...

Game 160 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Pirates (91-68) at Reds (90-69) 7:10 PM–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Here we go. The Bucs are in Cincinnati for the weekend (and only the weekend, hopefully) as they look to secure home field advantage for a playoff game on Tuesday night. As you surely know by now, they need to win 2 of 3 despite the current one game lead in the standings. And I...

Game 159 Preview: Pirates vs. Cubs

Pirates (90-67) at Cubs (65-92) 2:20 PM–Wrigley Field, Chicago MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT, WGN The Bucs look for the sweep at Wrigley Field today as they hope to gain ground on St Louis heading in to the final weekend. The Cards seem to be playing good ball again and a letdown seems unlikely, especially against the now-eliminated Nats and the Cubs this weekend at home, but you never...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs – Game 159

I want to thank the Pirates for last night’s win.  Yesterday I said this, I’ll take any win we can get, I’m just so tired of these crazy nail biters. Thanks for giving me what I wanted!!!!! Francisco Liriano will get his last start before the playoffs today. He’s likely going in the one game…

Game 159: Pirates vs. Cubs Recap

Source: FanGraphs Even now that they are good, the Pittsburgh Pirates refuse to do anything the easy way. Coming into this afternoon’s game, they had a chance to sweep the Cubs. And during the game, the Mets took down the Reds for the second straight night. That meant that a win would mean the Pirates…

The “Not-So-Wild” Card

This weekend in MLB, the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Cincinnati Reds in a pivotal 3 game series to close out the season – with the NL Wild Card berth on the line! Wait, hold on…. nevermind. They’re both in?  And they’re probably playing Tuesday in a one-game “playoff”?  Well then, that puts a damper on […]

Grilli back in closer role

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle confirmed the team is ready to put right-hander Jason Gilli back into the closer's role. Grilli, 36, missed a little more than six weeks with forearm discomfort. Since being placed back in the closers role Grilli has notched three saves, giving him 33 on the season. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Grilli recently.

The Biggest Regular Season Reds Series of my Lifetime

It’s only the biggest three game regular season series in my lifetime. That’s all that’s about to kick off this weekend. The Cincinnati Reds host the Pittsburgh Pirates for a three game series that ends the 2013 season. The winner of the series will host the one-game Wildcard playoff on Tuesday. The truth is, I’m still not over what happened to end last season. It has been...
