PLAYERS: Babe Ruth
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox

Babe Ruth hungover the Red Sox organization for 86 years.  The Curse of the Bambino even earned itself an HBO documentary that was told to us by insufferable Red Sox fan and Hollywood star, Ben Affleck.  But the Red Sox won in 2004.   They won again in 2007.  There is no more curse, one cannot be considered for at least 50 or so years.  When 2057 rolls around and the Sox haven’t won another title in between now and then, we can blame the owner of Toots Dollar Store in downtown Fort Meyers.

Skip Mufalli has placed his own curse on the Sox.   See, his store did well financially each year at this time.  The Red Sox spring traning facility was located at City of Palms Park for the last 19 years, which was nearby the historic district of Fort Meyers.  Well, the Red Sox built a new facility 13 miles away at JetBlue Park. The businesses that benefited most from the Red Sox are now downtrodden at the loss of revenue.   Mufalli has been the most outspoken critic, saying that the Sox snubbed them. He feels they owe it to them, because for some reason he thinks that area played a part in the Sox winning the World Series.

“I feel they abandoned us. I feel their curse will be reenacted on them for taking the sweet little town that made them come to a championship,”

okay there buddy

“They snubbed us, and now they’ll be snubbed,”

This is quite hysterical. There is no such thing as a curse, just badly played baseball. That is what the Sox were good at in big moments over an 86 year period. People like to believe that the Curse of the Bambino was, in fact, real. And because the Sox overcame the first 3-0 deficit in playoff history and it was against the organization Ruth was traded to, that is there proof. Sure. So what exactly will break this “curse?” The Sox having the smallest payroll?

And is it me, or did Babe Ruth always look old?

Ortiz: "It was a good ride being Tek's teammate"

While I'm not happy that Jason Varitek is retiring, I can acknowledge that it's for the best.  For all parties involved.  Still, though, it's going to be weird not seeing him suit up every afternoon. Luckily we still get to keep him as part of the organization.  Last season's perceived lack of leadership aside, this is still a man who is greatly respected...

Player Profile #17: Dustin Pedroia | 2B | BOS

Dustin Pedroia was able to quiet the critics by returning to form last season after an injury-plagued 2010. Not only did he return to form, but he posted his first 20/20 season and came very close to 100 runs and RBI (91 RBI). He actually had 100 at-bats batting fourth with a .347 average and 21 RBI so the 91 RBI might be a little high for him, but with a new manager and Jacoby...

Francona skeptical of Red Sox's ban on alcohol

Former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona is a bit skeptical of the team's ban on alcohol in the clubhouse. "I think it's a PR move," the now ESPN analyst said on the network's "Mike and Mike in the Morning" show. "I think if a guy wants a beer, he can probably get one. You know, it's kind of the old rule ... If your coach in football...

Crawford laments lost season, eyes rebound

When the 2011 season finally ended, Carl Crawford was emotionally drained and physically spent. "I can't even describe how bad last year was," he said. "Going through failure for the first time, it was hard to deal with."

FORT MYERS, Fla. — By being everywhere, Bobby Valentine is counting on the Red Sox going somewhere this season. The man was in constant motion from the time he rode his bike on an hour-long loop just to get to JetBlue Park early yesterday morning. He bounced from field to field...
