Yesterday, Luis Salazar, a minor league manager for the Atlanta Braves, was struck in the head by a foul ball line drive. Some stories have him leaning up against the dugout railing when getting hit before falling face-first to the concrete floor. Salazar was unconscious as he was taken from the ballpark.
Salazar appears to be OK — which is to say he’s alive — but there is a fear that he could lose the use of his left eye.
I was going to mention this in Saturday’s edition of Weekend Reading given that it’s the scariest incident of its kind we’ve had since Mike Coolbaugh’s tragic death and could bring some changes to baseball, but this morning it was revealed that there is a Mariners connection.
Salazar is Franklin Gutierrez’s father-in-law. He will be leaving Mariners camp to accompany his wife to Florida. He’s expected back Friday night.
