Good news: the Pirates have won two straight road games against a decent team.
Bad news: Jonathan Sanchez is pitching and both John McDonald and Clint Barmes are in the lineup.
First pitch this afternoon is at 3:40. Wade Miley will pitch for the Diamondbacks. I'm worried about quite a few aspects of this one.

Jonathan Sanchez’s control issues returned in the loss to the D-Backs.
When baseball games that count are played in early April, most of the conclusions people draw are based around confirmation bias. These first nine games are no more significant than the nine games that will happen May 8-16 or June 15-23 or whenever.
But conclusions are drawn at this point anyway, because all...
Wade Miley is one of those pitchers who just gets outs. The Arizona Diamondbacks lefthander doesn’t wow or dazzle, but that isn’t what matters. What does is results, and he got plenty of those last year in his rookie season. The 26-year-old left-hander won 16 games with a 3.33 ERA and 3.15 FIP.
How did he do it? Not with overpowering stuff. His primary pitch — which he threw...
Here is a blow-by-blow description of what happened in the Pirates/Diamondbacks game this afternoon:
- Clint Barmes and John McDonald both in the starting lineup. Oh crap.
- Jonathan Sanchez starting. Oh crap.
- 3-0 Diamondbacks after one. Oh crap.
- 6-0 Diamondbacks four batters in to the second inning.
- Third inning, Jonathan Sanchez still out there. ...
One must assume at this point in time Jonathan Sanchez and Chris Leroux will be 1. and 1a. when some of these pitchers start to get healthy. It was pretty infuriating to me that Sanchez broke camp with the team in the first place. If he stays much longer I just might have to take…
Today’s version of Jonathan Sanchez was the same one that went 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA last year, and that quickly ended any hopes of a sweep for the Pirates. What a mess.
Sanchez gave us a bit of hope in the early innings of his first start, but today’s outing was a completely different story. The D-Backs hit him extremely hard right from the get-go, and his usual wildness also...
The final game of the series in Arizona was not a pretty one. Jonathan Sanchez struggled with just about everything, and Wade Miley was his usual effective self, limiting the Pirates’ offense to just 2 runs in a 10-2 loss. The Diamondbacks scored their first run in the 1st inning on a pickoff attempt. AJ…
Pirates (3-5) at D-Backs (5-3)
3:40 PM–Chase Field, Phoenix
Bring out the brooms! The Bucs go for the sweep in today’s afternoon game out in Phoenix. This would obviously be a great way to recover from the rough Dodgers series and would build some momentum going in to a weekend home series against the Reds. It would be especially great if the offense...
Tuesday's picks went well enough yesterday. The day was not as clean as Monday was, but it could have been if both Los Angeles teams had not had bullpen implosions. For the Angels, Kevin Jepsen pitched like Carly Rae Jepson. Another game was incorrectly picked because Nick Tepesch pitched a good game for the Rangers. Who knew? The Cardinals pick was finally correct. So that...
The Pittsburgh Pirates are desperately looking for some offense to help out their pitching staff. Perhaps coming home for an extended period of time will jumpstart their bats.
The Pirates begin a 10-game homestand when they meet the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night.
Pittsburgh (3-6) has the most woeful offense in the majors, batting .153, and only Miami (16) has scored less runs...
As we get closer to the Hillsboro Hops opening day on June 14th, players and sports fans everywhere are beginning to shift focus to all things baseball. With MLB season underway, young minor league players throughout the country are vying for the chance to play professionally someday, and for many, the dream is not far out of reach.
Every year, players from the minors are brought...
