Normally, I don’t make a post about minor signings like this, but this is more than just a signing. Greenberg had 1 major league plate appearance and was hit in the head with the first pitch he faced.
Greenberg was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 9th round of the 2002 MLB draft out of North Carolina. Greenberg worked his way up the system and was in Double A by mid-2005.
This was when Greenberg got his shot with the Cubs. He was called up July 7, 2005 and made his all too short MLB debut on the 9th. He came up to pinch hit in the 9th inning versus the Marlins. Reliever Valerio de los Santos tossed a 92 MPH fastball directly into Greenberg’s head. He spent the remainder of the season on the DL dealing with the concussions and later vertigo.
He’s one of 4 players to be hit on their only at bat and the only one to have it done on the first pitch.
