Start naming the best pitchers of the 2013 season and it doesn’t take long to get to Adam Wainwright’s name. In fact there are very few names above him on that list. Wainwright is not only having a career year, he is having a historical year in some sense. Taking a look at the numbers he is having the best year of his career. Up until now 2010 was his best year when he was 20-11 with a 2.47 ERA and finished second in the Cy Young voting to Roy Halladay. Since then it has been a long road to recovery from the Tommy John Surgery that Wainwright underwent on February 28, 2011. The surgery takes up to 18 months to recover from and is hit and miss on what the player’s career will look like in the long term. Since the start of the second half of 2012, which was a little more than 16 months after surgery, Wainwright is 17-10 with a 2.71 ERA.
