Via Larry Brown Sports:

I know this may be earth-shattering news, but a lot of people like Tim Tebow.  He’s kind of popular.  Tebow’s team may have recently been embarrassed by the Patriots in Foxboro, but his following remains as strong as ever.  There are a number of men out there who — whether they admit it or not — have a serious man crush on Teebs.  In many ways, I can’t say I blame them.  Very few, however, feels as strongly about Tebow as Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright.

“I am obsessed with Tim Tebow,” Wainwright said according to an MLB.com story.  “I’m not afraid to say it. It’s almost embarrassing to us athletes that this much emphasis is put on Tim Tebow because that means we aren’t living our lives as we should. If we did that more often, the way he is living wouldn’t be as big a story. I’m so proud of him for living out his faith.

“Tim Tebow is such a great role model. I feel like he’s the face of sports right now, and rightfully so. He gives the whole nation something to believe in. It’s a story of hope.”

Tebow certainly is the face of sports and he certainly is a quality role model.  Wainwright is not the first, nor the second professional athlete to praise Tebow and he won’t be the last.  As far as obsession is concerned, that may be a little much.  I think everything Tebow does for the community and the way he uses his celebrity status to better the lives of others is terrific, but something about grown men worshiping other grown men just throws me for a loop.

  • I agreee with Adam Wainwright, Tebow should be praised for showing his faith and being proud of it, I also think more athletes need to follow in his footsteps! You go TEBOW and you too WAINWRIGHT!!!
  • Wainwright and Tebow certainly have the right to their style of worship, but don't insinuate that because I'm not a bible-thumping religious fanatic that I am somehow morally inferior. I owned a business for 18 years and I will put my business reputation up against anyone, no matter how religious they claim to be. You don't need to be religious to have ethics or morals. As for Tebow's football career, I wish him nothing but the best. If he didn't play for Denver I would probably root for him. But don't blame the world's troubles on secularism.
  • Good deal and not a thing to be embarrased about. Both of these guys are OK with me.
  • For what? How about for not being a typical douchebag athlete?

Religion aside, the guy is completely selfless and humble. By all indications, he genuinely cares more about other people than he does himself. The fact that you can't appreciate such a mindset, and apparently care more about his throwing motion, speaks volumes about you as a person.
  • Actually Tebow SHOULD be praised for how he is as an athlete and person. Not that he has a faith but that he stands up for it. The amount of things he does for the community, and the fact that he flies a child from his foundation to the games (home or away) to watch the game and meet many great people and get to spend a lot of time with him. He SHOULD be praised for how he treats people and how serious he takes being an athlete AND a role model. That's why he SHOULD be praised.
  • Tim Tebow fronts for anti-gay group, Focus on the Family, that lobbies vigorously against laws protecting gays and pushes the idea that being gay is a choice; it features “ex-gays” who tell how they became straight. In 2006, the American Psychological Assn. said that the positions pushed by Focus “create an environment in which prejudice and discrimination can flourish.” Focus on the Family is NOT a religious organization, it is a political PAC. That's why some people aren't buying his "nice guy" act. As long as he agrees with the conservative movement, they'll be happy use his celebrity and over-look his obvious lack of talent as an NFL QB.

Cardinals 2012 Winter Warm-Up leftovers

Having returned from covering the St. Louis Cardinals’ annual Winter Warm-Up this past weekend, I thought I would share some miscellaneous thoughts and experiences. Another one rides the bus (not) After interviewing about 30 players and executives over the course of the weekend, it got to be kind of funny as the same media members tended to ask the same questions over and over...

Beltran pickup gets big thumbs up from team

No St. Louis Cardinals player can be happier to have Carlos Beltran on their side than pitcher Kyle Lohse. The new right fielder is a .564 career hitter against Lohse with four home runs, six doubles and 12 RBIs. Add in 11 walks and the switch-hitting Beltran has a stunning .647 on-base percentage. Lohse, a 14-game winner last year, joked at the team's Winter Warmup that Beltran...

Cards' Greene to get opportunity to start at second

ST. LOUIS Calling second base his spot to lose may be a little much at this point, but it appears Cardinals infielder Tyler Greene will get every opportunity to win a starting spot there this spring. With the return of Rafael Furcal at shortstop, general manager John Mozeliak said the Cardinals plan to give the 28-year-old Greene plenty of chances to win the competition at second...

Cardinals, McClellan avoid arbitration at $2.5M

The St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Kyle McClellan have avoided arbitration by agreeing to $2.5 million, one-year deal. The 27-year-old McClellan replaced injured Adam Wainwright in the rotation last season and was 6-6 with a 4.21 ERA in 17 starts. He was moved to the bullpen after the acquisition of Edwin Jackson at the trade deadline and went 6-1 in 26 relief appearances...

Questions abound for defending champs

You want intrigue? Summer-long drama that'll take you right to October's doorstep? The Cardinals are here to oblige. The defending world champs have so many unanswered questions they're already the industry's most irresistible (and unpredictable) commodity in 2012. Obviously, the Marlins and Angels have spent more this winter; both have drastically remade their profiles...

Minus two familiar faces, Cardinals visit White House

Two familiar faces were missing when the St. Louis Cardinals paid a visit to the White House on Tuesday. Former manager Tony La Russa and long-time Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols were not in attendance as President Barack Obama and the first lady welcomed the reigning World Series champions. La Russa retired shortly after St. Louis topped the Texas Rangers in Game 7 of the World...

Cardinals confident despite Pujols' exit (AP)

Albert Pujols is long gone, and the St. Louis Cardinals seem just fine about defending their World Series title without him. Their fans, too. General manager John Mozeliak got a favorable reception at the team's annual Winter Warmup this weekend when he revisited the negotiations. Chairman Bill DeWitt is bullish about the moves made with the Pujols money.
