(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (11-13) picked-up a 5-3 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (8-13) Monday night in game one of a four-game set with the Boston Red Sox Double A Affiliate. Addison Maruszak was 2-3 with two runs batted in for the Thunder, who won for the eighth time in eleven tries at Waterfront Park in 2011.

For the fifth straight game at Waterfront Park, the Thunder struck first against their opponent, bringing home two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. In the inning, both Corban Joseph and Maruszak singled home runs for their eighth and ninth runs batted in on the season, respectively. Joseph’s single extended his Eastern League-leading hitting streak to fourteen games.

Looking to extend their 2-1 lead, the Thunder offense was back at it in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on an Oscar Tejeda error along the way. That error by the Sea Dog second baseman led the inning off and allowed Joseph to reach. Later in the frame, Maruszak brought home Joseph for his second RBI single of the game. Two batters later, Dan Brewer drove home Maruszak from second base for his fourth RBI of the season, and the Thunder took a 4-1 lead.

Thunder starter Criag Heyer threw five innings of three-run ball to nab the victory, and Thunder relievers Tim Norton, Brian Anderson and Fernando Hernandez threw four innings scoreless innings, only allowing one hit.

The Thunder continue their seven-game homestand on an Educational Day Tuesday with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) in game two of a four-game series. Trenton starter LHP Steve Garrison (0-3, 7.11) will deliver the first pitch at 10:35 AM, and the Sea Dogs will counter with RHP Alex Wilson (3-1, 4.26). The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 10:20 AM. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com.
