Outside the Boxscore:
The game of baseball is usually a pretty safe sport but there are times that pitchers can lose control of balls and the batter ends up paying for them.
During Tuesday night's Rangers/Red Sox affair, Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre was at the plate in the eighth inning facing Boston hurler Vicente Padilla.
In the at-bat, Padilla lost control of a pitch and ended up hitting Beltre right in the batting helmet:
Beltre would end up being okay but might miss today's game with a cerebral contusion.
BEST OF MAXIM
ARLINGTON, Texas Texas Rangers veteran pitcher Roy Oswalt joked to Robbie Ross that the rookie lefty had made the big time.
Maybe if the big time involves an expanded waistline.
The organization that's responsible for introducing ballpark nachos to the country in the 1970s has taken things up a notch with the unveiling of the Totally Rossome nachos, with the name a tip of...
Thing Adrian Beltre fears: being touched on the top of his head by his teammates.
Thing Adrian Beltre fears even more than that: being touched on the top of his head by a fastball from Vicente Padilla.

Rangers owner, president and CEO Nolan Ryan had some stern words about his slumping superstar player, saying Hamilton "doesn’t seem to be locked in at all."
Josh Hamilton was the hottest hitter in baseball the first two months of the season. The former AL MVP clubbed 21 home runs in April and May, posting a 1.182 and 1.187 OPS in both months, respectively. The highlight of his hot streak was an incredible four home run game in Baltimore. But then Hamilton hit .222 in June with four home runs and is only batting .172 with three home runs...
Everybody can agree that Josh Hamilton is mind-bogglingly talented -- even for a five-time All-Star and former MVP, and especially for somebody who was completely out of baseball for three years as he grappled with recovering from debilitating addictions. Even baseball's Superman, however, has his kryptonite. For Hamilton, that kryptonite is pitches out of the strike zone. It...
Being compared to Hank Aaron is usually a good thing. But not when Nolan Ryan is mentioning Aaron when he talks about why he thinks you're slacking off at the plate. Ryan, the president and CEO of the Texas Rangers, called out star slugger Josh Hamilton on Monday on 103.3 KESN. "Some of his at-bats aren't very impressive from the standpoint that he doesn't work deep...
Mike Napoli has a history of hurting the Red Sox on the field, but he was sitting out of Wednesday's game in Texas. Whether he was sitting in the dugout or in the stands, however, was a little difficult to determine. NESN cameras spotted a fan at Wednesday night's game with a sign proclaiming his resemblance to the Rangers catcher and we have to hand it to him, he's right...
Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Josh Hamilton is, statistically speaking, the coldest hitter on the Texas Rangers. Bet you didn't expect that statement to ever be true back in May. The first two months of Hamilton's season...
Any time a multi-millionaire semi-stabilizing recovering crackhead starts to have trouble doing the thing he’s best at and then publicly describes himself as ”out of sorts mentally” there should be cause for concern. Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton started the season hitting the ball like a Triple Crown winner over the months of April and May,
Derek Holland struck out seven and pitched into the eighth inning and the Texas Rangers took advantage of a couple of wild throws by Josh Beckett to score the go-ahead run in a 5-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
Elvis Andrus was hit on the left forearm by a pitch to reach with one out in the seventh. He got to third on a single by Adrian Beltre and scored to...
Boy, the Rangers had a lot of off-days in July. I hope they enjoyed them because there are only two in August and two in September. Whew. We’re on the downhill swing of the season, folks. Hang on.
While trade rumors continue to swirl, let’s meet another one of my Rangers tweeps — Carter Dotson of San Antonio (and soon Chicago).
When and how did...
Roy Oswalt's name was bandied around regularly in the spring as Boston and other teams eyed the free agent pitcher. But the Red Sox quickly fell out of the race for the three-time All-Star, with reports surfacing that Oswalt wanted a club closer to his Mississippi home, and that he wasn't interested in getting offers from Boston and several other teams. Now, Oswalt says he...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Mike Aviles blooped a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 Tuesday night, ending a four-game losing streak.
Red Sox reliever Vicente Padilla (4-0) escaped a first-and-third jam in the eighth. He hit Adrian Beltre in the helmet with a pitch, leaving the Texas star with a bruise on his head.
