Found October 12, 2013 on Pirates Prospects:
Scottsdale took on Glendale in the fourth game of the Arizona Fall League season on Friday night. Two Pittsburgh Pirates players were in the starting lineup tonight and another came out of the bullpen. Scottsdale lost for the third straight game after winning the season opener. Glendale won the game by a 5-1 score as their pitchers struck out 17 batters. Scottsdale pitchers were almost as good in that category, picking up 13 strikeouts of their own. Gift Ngoepe batted second tonight and played second base after batting lead-off and playing shortstop in his first start on Wednesday. In each of his first two AB’s on Friday night, Ngoepe grounded out to second base. He struck out looking in the sixth, an inning that saw all three Scottsdale hitters strike out. Ngoepe struck out again in the eighth, leaving him hitless through two games. Alex Dickerson was in left field tonight and he moved down in the lineup from the five hole to the seventh spot. He struck out looking in his first tim...

Can the Pirates do it again next year?

Midnight struck for baseball’s Cinderella last night, as Adam Wainwright‘s curveball played the part of the wicked stepmother. Actually, I don’t know the Cinderella story well enough to know if that sentence makes sense, so let’s move on from this tortured analogy after just one sentence. The Pirates lost last night, and the season that put the city back on the map as a...

The MLB off-season is full of potential moves, whether those moves are free agency, option years, arbitration eligible players, or non-tender candidates. Earlier this week I looked at some of the bigger moves that were in store for the Pirates this off-season. Below is a list of players who are eligible for off-season transactions, along with some important dates for those transactions...

Pirates Off-Season Preview: Burnett, First Base, and the Walker Problem

The Pittsburgh Pirates made the playoffs this year, and will largely be keeping the same team together next year. When you add in the continued improvements from young players, and the expected mid-season additions of prospects like Jameson Taillon and Gregory Polanco, then you’ve got a team that has the potential to be strong once again next year. Because of this, there aren...

Felix Pie, Marlon, Byrd and Andrew McCutchen celebrating a win in St. Louis (Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images) The Pittsburgh Pirates season came to and end on Wednesday with a 6-1 loss to Adam Wainwright and the St. Louis Cardinals. While Pirates fans and players are disappointed the season is over, it is far from a disappointing season for the organization and fan base, which...

Scottsdale dropped their second straight game, losing 6-3 today.  Alen Hanson was the only Pittsburgh Pirates player in the starting lineup. He batted lead-off and played shortstop. Hanson struck out in his first AB, then reached on an error in...

Burnett: 'I badly wanted to pitch.'

A.J. Burnett was on the phone shortly before 4 p.m. and he was not happy. He had a right not to be happy. My story questioning Burnett's unavailability for Game 5 last night was wrong. He was unavailable. But not because he wanted to be. I put two and two together and came up with five. I apologized to Burnett and I'm apologizing to the readers. Burnett said between expletives...

The Pirates Won’t Have Problems Attracting Free Agents

Marlon Byrd is a free agent this off-season, and would be a good stopgap until Gregory Polanco is ready. (Photo Credit: David Hague) We’re about a month away from the time when Major League Baseball players are first eligible for free agency. We’re about two months away from the time when those players actually start to sign with teams. So it’s early in the process. But it’s...

Pirates not satisfied after breakthrough season

The Pittsburgh Pirates didn't simply end a streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons in 2013, they smashed it. Pittsburgh won 94 games, made the playoffs and pushed St. Louis to the brink in the NL division series. Now comes the hard part, staying near the top. The Pirates will have several big decisions to make in the offseason, including whether to try and re-sign pitcher A...

Proud to be a Fan of these Pirates

The saying goes that “All great things must come to an end.” Only one team makes it to the top of the mountain with the trophy, while 29 others are still climbing. And when it comes to the amazing 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates season it would come to end short of the mountain peak. It’s okay…

Like Penguins, Bucs Still Have Work To Be Done

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates may be out the playoffs already – c'mon, they lost to a team they were up in the series 2-1 on, really? – but at least one Pittsburgh team won this baseball season. Yep, you guessed it – the Penguins. Now that the Pirates have gone belly-up in the playoffs for the first time in one year in the Andrew McCutchen era, maybe we'll hear...

First Pitch: Pirates Need to Stay The Course

The Rays will trade David Price this off-season, and the Pirates should have nothing to do with him. David Price will be a big name on the trade market this off-season. He’s one of the best pitchers in the game, and has two years remaining. If you want the comfort of two years of an established major league pitcher, you can’t do much worse than him. The Pirates certainly could...
