Phil Hughes could find himself out of the starting rotation if his performance does not improve. Hughes has given up 13 hits and eight runs in just eight innings this season.
During spring training and coming into the season, the New York Yankees and GM Brian Cashman continued to say it’s a luxury to have ‘too much’ pitching. Sure, that may be the case, but if that pitching is not performing well, it really doesn’t matter how many potential starters you have.
Entering today (Tuesday), the Yankees starting pitchers have not performed to expectations. The only starter with an ERA under 4.00 is newcomer Hiroki Kuroda. Ever he has had mixed results so far this year. After a rough first start against Tampa Bay where he gave up eight hits and six runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings, Kuroda bounced back with a nice performance against the Angels in the Yankees home opener. In that contest, Kuroda went eight shutout innings, giving up just five hits and striking out six.
