The #Pirates have reinstated RHP A.J. Burnett from the 15-day DL & he will start the game tonight in Pittsburgh vs St. Louis. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 21, 2012   Well this is a surprise. Apparently tonight’s scheduled starter, Kevin Correia, is experiencing discomfort in his side and has been scratched. A.J. Burnett, who was scheduled to make his final rehab start at AA-Altoona tonight will instead take the mound tonight against the Cardinals. Tom make room for Burnett on the active roster, Jared Hughes has been optioned to AAA. Hughes had posted a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings so far this season. Burnett was acquired by the Pirates back in February from the Yankees and unfortunately suffered an injury the first week of spring training when he fouled a bunt off his eye. He has made two rehab starts between Bradenton and Indianapolis and was scheduled to pitch around 100 pitches today before joining the club the next time through the rotation. No word yet on the seriou...

Burnett brilliant, Bucs win

I’ll admit it – I was very worried about A.J. Burnett tonight. He was coming off two terrible rehab starts, had to be somewhat unprepared for the NL-best lineup he was facing, and was generally being overhyped by Pirates fans (I was a fan of the Burnett pick up, but I certainly didn’t expect him to walk in here and become an ace). For at least one night, Burnett DID look like...

Burnett to make his debut with Pirates Saturday

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated A.J. Burnett off the 15-day disabled list and the right-hander is slated to start on Saturday night against St. Louis. Burnett will start in place of Kevin Correia, who was scratched with discomfort in his side. The 35-year-old Burnett has been out since fracturing his right orbital bone during a bunting drill on Feb. 29. He underwent surgery on...

A.J. Burnett starting for the Pirates tonight

In a surprise move this afternoon, the Pirates announced that A.J. Burnett will start tonight in place of Kevin Correia, who will sit out with discomfort in his left side. Burnett was supposed to make his final rehab start tonight for Double-A Altoona. His previous two rehab starts both went very poorly, but this is exciting nonetheless. Correia says he “feels fine” and isn...

Cardinals can't score on Burnett, Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A.J. Burnett pitched three-hit ball for seven innings in his injury-delayed Pittsburgh debut and the Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on Saturday night. Burnett, who missed the first three weeks of the year while recovering from a fractured right orbital bone sustained during a bunting drill in spring training, walked two and struck out seven. Joel Hanrahan...

A.J. Burnett spectacular in Pirates debut

Final: Pirates 2, Cardinals 0 WP: A.J. Burnett (1-0, 0.00 ERA) LP: Jake Westbrook (2-1, 1.31 ERA) SV: Joel Hanrahan (2, 3.60 ERA) It looked like Burnett’s Pirates debut was going to be a disaster. He walked his first batter, then gave up a single, and then walked a batter to load up the bases in the first inning with nobody out. He followed that up, though, with two strikeouts...

Burnett's debut

AJ Burnett's debut is coming a little earlier than anyone expected, but I'm still pretty excited to see what he can do in a Pirate uniform. His rehab starts were a little dicey, sure, but those are about as meaningful as spring training starts, in my eyes, and as long as he was hitting his velocity targets and his other pitches looked OK (which they did, by most accounts...

Game 14: Pirates 2 Cardinals 0

The first three batters AJ Burnett faced as a Pirate were awfully never-wracking; Burnett began his Pirate career tonight with a walk, a single, and a second walk to load the bases up with nobody out. Given his struggles in his rehab starts and the way that he was called up with seemingly no notice instead of making a rehab start tonight, it sure seemed like Burnett just wasn'...

Cardinals can’t score on Pirates, Burnett

Fresh off the DL, Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett shut out the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday night, wasting another solid outing by Jake Westbrook.

On Michael Pineda, A.J. Burnett, Pedro Feliciano, and the media's double standard

I just want to, for once, admit that Squawker Jon was totally right on something. Specifically, he called the Michael Pineda injury issue correctly three weeks ago, comparing it to Phil Hughes' tendinitis, and mocking Joe Girardi for calling the diagnosis at the time "great news:"When reporters noted that Hughes was also diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis last year...
