With the Pirates off last night, the Cardinals lost to the Reds (their third loss to the Reds in four games and their fifth loss in seven against the Reds and Pirates). That sets the scene for the final Pirates/Cardinals series of the year (for now?) this weekend at Busch Stadium thusly: the Pirates have a 1 1/2 game lead on the Cardinals and a three game lead on the Reds. That means that the only way that this weekend can end with anyone other than the Pirates in first place is if the Cardinals sweep the Pirates. If the Pirates can win two games in this series, they will enter the season's third-to-last week with a 2 1/2 game lead on the Cardinals and at least a two-game lead on the Reds, depending on how the Reds handle the Dodgers in Cincinnati this weekend. Which is to say this: the NL Central will not be decided this weekend, but when it finally is decided it's going to be the outcome of weekends like this one that create whatever the final result is. The Pirates ha...

Pirates let go of pitcher James McDonald

getty The Pittsburgh Pirates released pitcher James McDonald on Saturday. McDonald, 28, had a great first half to the 2012 season but has struggled since. He has been out since June 21 with shoulder discomfort. In six games this season McDonald was 2-2 with a 5.76 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. With a career 4.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP there figures to be at-least one team that will give McDonald...

Huntington’s Deals Indicative of Focus Beyond 81 Wins

The streak is over. It ended Tuesday with a bang, after Travis Snider’s pinch-hit, go-ahead home run in the ninth inning. Now, Pirates fans can focus on more significant items on the agenda as the Pirates play out their final 23 games of the 2013 regular season. The most significant item on said agenda is a deep playoff run. Success for the Pirates has started from the top, and...

Wainwright believes he has recent struggles figured out

ST. LOUIS -- So, Adam Wainwright, you think tipping pitches was your problem against the Reds? Wainwright, with big grin: "You never can tell about those things." Does that mean yes? Still grinning: "I may have seen something." Pause. "I may have." Well, maybe he is hoping that tipping pitches was the problem. That at least would provide a plausible...

Pirates lose 12-8 to Cardinals, lead by half-game

The Pittsburgh Pirates have no worries about posting their first winning record in 21 years, a milestone that will come soon enough. Also, they won't have to face Joe Kelly again. ''Tonight we pushed him. We were one big hit away,'' manager Clint Hurdle said after the St. Louis Cardinals pulled to a half-game back of the NL Central leaders with a 12-8 victory...

For every King, a Crown: An NL race that matters

The National League batting title race has been ignored this year, and understandably so. Miguel Cabrera has been nothing short of legendary. His race with Chris Davis for the Triple Crown has overshadowed the offensive race in the NL. For Colorado Rockies fans, the NL Batting Title is the only race that matters right now. With Todd Helton reaching his 2,500 hit milestone, fans’...

New guys have been key to Pirates' mastery of Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- Forget about Pedro Alvarez being the Cardinals' nemesis. That was last year's news. After pummeling St. Louis for seven homers, 23 RBIs and a .397 batting average in 2012, Alvarez has been limited to two homers, 10 RBIs and a .169 average in 2013. Then how have the Pirates -- who have won 10 of 16 games between the NL Central's top two teams -- been able...

Allen Craig doesn't have fracture, is expected to return this season

Cardinals All-Star first baseman Allen Craig was forced from Wednesday's game against the Reds and sent back to St. Louis for some evaluation on his sprained left foot. Fortunately for Craig and the Cardinals the news was good. He doesn't have a fracture reporters have been notified (Cardinals.com). There's no set timetable for his return but Craig is expected to be...

Cards have timetable for Craig return

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said he'd be happy if Allen Craig could return for the postseason. Craig, who is sidelined by a left mid-foot sprain, is wearing a boot to immobilize the injury sustained rounding first base Wednesday in Cincinnati. Craig has had a pair of MRI exams and met with a handful of doctors whose opinions have the Cardinals cautiously...

First Pitch: The Pirates Are Basically in the Playoffs Right Now

The Pirates lost a big game to the Cardinals tonight. (Photo Credit: David Hague) I’ve never gotten caught up in the results of individual games. The Pirates can lose, and within minutes I’ve forgotten about the game. Some tough losses stick with you for a little bit, but individual games don’t have a huge impact on me, positive or negative. A big part of that is because I’ve...

Minor League Schedule: Rodriguez and Taillon Attempt to Keep Indianapolis in Playoffs

The minor league season is done for all but three of the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliates. Indianapolis lost game two last night, putting them one loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs. West Virginia lost game one on Wednesday, then had off yesterday. They are also facing a must win game today. Jamestown won the NYPL Wildcard spot and will go up against the Pirates affiliate...

Memphis Redbirds: Season in Review

It was a tough 2013 season for the Memphis Redbirds. The Redbirds finished the year with a 69-75 record and one game out in the Pacific Coast League American – North Division. The Redbirds had a one game lead with two games left and could not win one of their last two. A 69-75 record may seem pretty rough, but not for this team. The Redbirds were decimated by promotions and call...

Allen Craig has sprained foot but no fracture

CINCINNATI (AP) St. Louis first baseman Allen Craig has a sprained left foot but no fracture, a big relief for a Cardinals team that feared it had lost its cleanup hitter for the rest of the season. Craig hurt his foot while rounding first base in the fourth inning of a 5-4, 16-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. He stayed on the ground for a long time and walked...
