The old exploding rosin bag prank has struck AJ Burnett again. Burnett fell victim to the prank on opening day and again on Sunday upon his return from the disabled list.
As you can see Burnett threw up two fingers at his teammates in the dugout acknowledging the second time he fell to the prank.
Burnett went five innings allowing two runs, one earned, in his return to the hill. He walked two and struck out three in a no decision. The Cubs would end up beating the Pirates in extra innings.

Pittsburgh Pirates hurler A.J. Burnett exploded his second rosin bag of the season yesterday against the Chicago Cubs. Ironically, it was against the Cubbies that he did it last time on opening day. Burnett is leading the league in powder explosions with two and on pace to shatter the major league record.

Your browser does not support iframes. AJ Burnett and rosin bags are an explosive combination. Literally. On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates ace had a rosin bag explode all over him in Pittsburgh's loss to the Chicago Cubs. The rare spectacle is seen in the video clip above and is strange in and of itself. However, further adding to the oddness of the explosion is the fact that...
For the second time this year A.J. Burnett has had a rosin bag ‘give out on him.’ On Sunday during the Pirates match-up with the Chicago Cubs, Burnett grabbed the rosin bag and as he was tapping it across his leg it exploded actually causing a minor delay in the 4th inning. Make sure to watch as the announcers turn into little schoolgirls with their giggling. We have yet to...
Your browser does not support iframes. AJ Burnett returned from the disabled list to start for Pittsburgh on Sunday, and his Pirates teammates welcomed him back with a familiar prank. Burnett went to the rosin bag after walking Chicago Cubs catcher Welington Castillo in the fourth, and the bag opened up on him. Burnett threw [...]
They say lightning never strikes twice, but when it comes to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett it appears that the rosin bag does. For the second time this season, the first being on Opening Day (which was also April Fool's Day), Burnett had a rosin bag burst on him during a game.
This time it happened during the 4th inning so it sounds like this one might not...
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett from the disabled list to start Sunday against the Chicago Cubs.
Burnett has been sidelined since June 8 with a strained right calf. He is 4-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 14 starts.
Right-handed reliever Ryan Reid was sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for Burnett on the roster. Reid had a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings...

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett from the disabled list and have optioned Ryan Reid to make room. Thoughts to come.
And he’s well aware it’s his second one of the season.
Here’s his first run-in with the rosin bag.
This is pretty hilarious stuff from A.J. Burnett.
According to a story via Larry Brown Sports, the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher, had good intentions when he went to Twitter yesterday to voice his displeasure that teammate Pedro Alvarez, who has 22 home runs this season, was left off the NL Home Run Derby team by David Wright.
Well his beef with Wright quickly became secondary when...
A.J. Burnett made an effort to stand up for teammate Pedro Alvarez on Monday, but he ended up in an embarrassing situation instead. The Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher was stunned and disappointed to learn that Alvarez, who is third in the NL with 22 home runs this season, was not chosen by David Wright to represent [...]
When writing about the Pirates' All-Star selections yesterday, I didn't talk much about Jeff Locke. It's not that I don't think Locke deserves to be on the team (I certainly do think he does), it's just that I think that five years from now we're going to go to Locke's Baseball-Reference page and see the "All-Star" banner and wonder just exactly...
The Pirates wrapped up a bad week and a bad series at Wrigley with a tough extra inning loss on Sunday afternoon, wasting a dramatic Starling Marte homer in the ninth inning.
A.J. Burnett made his return to the rotation and was pretty solid, although he didn’t dominate the Cubs as he has in the past at Wrigley. That’s understandable since it was his first start in a month. Burnett...
The Pirates have lost four of their last six games, losing a series each to the Phillies and Cubs. That sent the team plummeting to having the best record in baseball still, even after those losses. Yet, as with any loss, the word “collapse” gets thrown around, as if losing a series is something that could only mean a collapse, rather than just something that happens to every...
Pirates (53-33) at Cubs (37-48)
2:20 PM–Wrigley Field, Chicago

The Bucs look to bounce back from an uninspiring loss yesterday and take this weekend’s series on the road at Wrigley. The Bucs haven’t lost two games in a row in quite a while, but doing so today would mark two consecutive series losses, which wouldn’t be great way to head in to...
