First things first! The kind gentlemen at Productive Outs had me on their podcast last night to talk about the Pirates. You should check it out. The Pirates have a chance to sweep the Rangers this afternoon, and we're reached a point in the season at which I'm no longer happy to say things like, "Well, the Pirates got the first two in this series, so a win today would be gravy." The Rangers are down right now and the Pirates need to kick them in the ribs today. On Sunday, it seemed like the Pirates would be lucky to get one win in this series. Somehow getting three wins on the road here would be a huge boost before these games against the Cubs and Padres.  Clint Hurdle, apparently, does not agree. Jordy Mercer and Andrew McCutchen combined for the entirety of the Pirates' offense last night, more or less, and they're both on the bench today. Starting Clint Barmes over Mercer, I can understand, since AJ Burnett is pitching and Barmes is a bit stronge...

Pittsburgh Pirates: 10 thoughts after sweep of Rangers

(Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug; opening image credit idahostatesman) 1.  This could be the sweep that locks in a playoff spot for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and saves their September.  After being swept and knocked out of first place by the St. Louis Cardinals- and heading to Arlington with a slumping rotation to face a high-powered Texas Rangers’ offense- the potential was easily...

The Pittsburgh Pirates need to not only win the NL Central…

The Pirates picked up win no. 82 on Monday, another stepping stone toward a playoff berth that’s becoming more and more likely with each passing day. On the morning of Sept. 11, everything looks pretty good at the moment as indicated by the current NL Central standings. St. Louis Cardinals: 84-60, 99.8 percent playoff odds Pittsburgh Pirates: 83-61, 99.1 percent playoff odds Cincinnati...

Pittsburgh Pirates flamethrower Gerrit Cole will dominate as a reliever in October

In a somewhat surprising decision, Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle announced flamethrower Gerrit Cole will likely be used out of the bullpen during the postseason. After another quality outing on Monday, the 22-year-old Cole (7-7, 3.48 ERA) has now recorded 75 strikeouts over 98.1 innings. Chosen first overall out of UCLA in 2011, the 6-foot-4, 220 pound Cole consistently...

Pittsburgh Pirates : Halloween Eve for fan base

When the St. Louis Cardinals swept the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, there was an all too familiar feeling of dread that spread throughout the steel city and it started with the local media. Each local station had their sports reporters delivering the somber news and quite frankly it literally could have been the worst night in Pittsburgh sports history.   There was so much...

Every Pirates Pitcher With Doug Drabek's Mullet and Mustache

Last night the Pittsburgh Pirates won their 82nd game of the 2013 season, a remarkable accomplishment for a franchise that hasn't sniffed .500 since George H.W. Bush was our president and I had a Commodore 64. In a 162-game season, 81 wins got the team to .500-at-worst...82 takes the Buccos over the hump and into "winning season" territory. THIS IS FINALLY HAPPENING...

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made their own history

We told you it would happen – and it happened. In dramatic fashion, the Pirates went into Texas where they had previously never won a game and beat Yu Darvish 1-0 on a Pedro Alvarez double. When Mark Melancon induced a ground ball to second baseman Neil Walker, it ended 21 long years of futility. Gerrit Cole threw a gem of a game and the possibly MVP Andrew McCutchen had two hits...

2013 Fantasy Baseball, The Daily Fix: September 11, 2013

Let me offer a belated congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates and their fans. On Monday, the Pirates won their 82nd game of the season behind a strong seven inning effort by Gerrit Cole. This marked the first time in 21 seasons that the Pirates will finish with a record above .500. To put that in perspective, let’s consider the list of events that have occurred during that time...

Pirates Open 11-Game Homestand with 3-1 Victory

While the Chicago Cubs took an early 1-0 lead Thursday night, the Pirates (85-61) appeared in control of the team’s series-opener throughout. Jeff Locke tossed his best start since the All-Star Break, and the Pirates cruised to a 3-1 victory despite falling behind in the third inning by a one-run margin. Locke kept the Cubs from recording a hit until Darnell McDonald led off the...

Pirates sweep Rangers with 7-5 win

Had Clint Barmes been standing a couple feet to his right the Pirates might have had more than a two-run victory. Then again had Barmes' high fly ball sailed a couple feet left the Pirates might not have left the Lone Star State with a sweep. Barmes clanked a home run off the left-field foul pole in the eighth inning and drove in two runs Wednesday afternoon to help the Pirates...

You Won't Believe Everything That's Happened Since the Pirates Had a Winning Season

It’s been a long time since the Pittsburgh Pirates had a winning season. A well-documented long time. My daughter is a junior in college, and...

Game 144 Preview: Pirates vs. Rangers

Pirates (82-61) at Rangers (81-62) 8:05 PM–Rangers Ballpark, Arlington MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Streak is now in the rear view mirror. Tonight the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field as a winning baseball club focused on getting to the playoffs and winning their division. With 19 games left, things are certainly looking up a bit more than they were on Sunday night. The Pirates...

McCutchen, Mercer lead Pirates to 5-4 win over Rangers

The Pirates have relied most of this season on a shutdown bullpen to make up for a lackluster offense. Those roles were reversed Tuesday night. The offense built a big enough lead to protect against a shaky bullpen as the Pirates held on to beat Texas 5-4 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The Pirates led by as many as four runs in the game but needed reliever Mark Melancon to strike...

The final homestand of 2013 starts tonight

After their roller-coaster road trip to Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Texas, the Pirates return home to PNC Park tonight to kick off an 11-game homestand against the Chicago Cubs. These 11 home games are the last regular season games to be played at PNC this year, and given that eight of them are against lousy teams, the Pirates are going to need to win a bunch of these games if they...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Texas Rangers – Game 144

82 wins.  Our long national nightmare is over. And what a job by Gerrit Cole last night.  Throwing the team and the city on his back and doing everything he could to win that game. I hate to say the Pirates need this series but we’re under 20 games.  The Pirates have a ton of…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs – Game 146

The last homestand of the season.  Eleven games,  eight against sub-.500 teams.  It’s not crazy to say this homestand will make or break the Pirates chances of winning the division.  Personally I think it’ll be tough to win the division by going any worse than 8-3. What do I know though? It’s not out of…
