DETROIT - The Tigers appear to have avoided some bad news on a night filled with good news for the bullpen. Reliever Al Alburquerque who has been dominant in his last four outings said he felt something pull in the groin of his right leg, but added that it was nothing serious. He was delivering his second pitch to Kansas City Royals cleanup hitter Eric Hosmer in the seventh inning on Wednesday night when the problem occurred. Alburquerque proceeded to walk Hosmer after striking out both Alcides Escobar and Billy Butler on nasty sliders they flailed at for the third strikes. Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand then trotted out to the mound with manager Jim Leyland trailing him. I was suspicious, Leyland said. Alburquerque said he told Rand he was OK, but then walked Lorenzo Cain on four straight pitches. The last pitch was a 90 mph fastball that was well below the speed hed been reaching, and Leyland immediately brought in Joaquin Benoit to replace Alburquerque. But I dont expect this to be anything, Leyland said. We were very fortunate. Alburquerque probably will not be available (Thursday), but well see. Alburquerque said he will be available in the final game of the series. I will be ready for tomorrow with (Justin) Verlander pitching, Alburquerque said. I feel its nothing serious. He did not believe the cold temperatures 39 degrees when he was pitching contributed to the tightness he experienced in the groin area.

The Detroit Tigers recently signed Jose Valverde and sent him to the minor leagues, and they've already called him up to close.

Jim Leyland excited for Jose Valverde’s return to Tigers

The Detroit Tigers welcomed back Jose Valverde Tuesday, six months after the team bid farewell to the closer, signing him to a one-year Major League Baseball deal. Valverde will be the Tigers closer if the they take a lead

Blister shouldn't hinder Verlander for long

DETROIT -- There was a silver lining to Detroit's rainy, extra-inning loss Thursday afternoon -- Justin Verlander is fine. Tigers fans had to be worried when Verlander left the game after seven innings with a blister on his pitching thumb, but both he and Jim Leyland were relatively unconcerned. "I started noticing it at the end of my last start, and it started to get...

Valverde gets save in 2013 debut

DETROIT A skip, a spit and once again, it was Potato Time. As unthinkable as it might have seemed in late October, Jose Valverde was indeed coming through that Comerica Park bullpen door. Most of the fans rose to their feet and cheered Detroit's prodigal son, and while a few booed, everyone was on the edge of their seats as Valverde prepared to save his first game since Oct...

Tigers go back to Pappa

After the Tigers were swept out of the World Series last October, I believed that Kwame Kilpatrick had a better chance of making a comeback than Jose Valverde. It was difficult to watch Papa Grandes playoff meltdown, especially the snapshot of him in the dugout searching for answers as tears welled up in his eyes. Once the season ended, the Tigers let it be known that Valverde...

Detroit Tigers Recall Young Phenom Bruce Rondon

MLB News: The Detroit Tigers recalled Bruce Rondon on Tuesday from Triple-A Toledo to fill the void left when the organization had to place Octavio Dotel on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation  Rondon will fill in for late inning relief and depending on how things go, could eventually win the closer’s job outright with the Tigers. Fantasy Ramifications: While...

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year contract with reliever Jose Valverde, who is expected back with the team Wednesday. And manager Jim Leyland says Valverde will be Detroit's closer immediately. Bruce Rondon Recalled by Detroit Tigers; Octavio Dotel Lands on 15-Day DL

The Detroit Tigers’ closer of the future is headed to the big-league club. Bruce Rondon, who entered spring as the heir apparent to Jose Valverde as the team’s ninth-inning man, has been recalled by the Tigers with reliever Octavio Dotel landing on the 15-day DL due to elbow soreness. Dotel has been dealing with elbow inflammation since an April 12 appearance against the A...

Victor Martinez wanted no part in home-plate tag

The Detroit Tigers front office can’t at all be disappointed in Victor Martinez’s decision making during Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Martinez, who missed the entire 2012 season because of torn ACL, decided against a home plate collision/tagging the base with catcher Salvador Perez and running straight to the dugout. Martinez has done this at home plate...

TDSS Tigers Game Recap, Game 19: Jose Valverde Slams the Door in His Return

Jose Valverde, sporting a half-dyed goatee and a full windup pitching motion, tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning in his first Tigers appearance of the year, closing out a 7-5 Detroit win over Kansas City. Less than a month after the Tigers signed Valverde to a minor-league contract, he was back in the Comerica Park bullpen and at he end of the Tigers’ bullpen. Valverde was the third of...

Jose Valverde returns, gets 1-2-3 save

It was pretty clear that Jose Valverde was on the fast track to the Tigers' bullpen once he was signed to a minor league deal earlier this month. When Octavio Dotel got officially shelved on the DL yesterday with a bum elbow, Valverde's ticket back to the bigs came even sooner.  Back as the team's closer, Valverde got a chance to redeem himself from a horrid playoffs...

The post Miami Marlins Claim Pitcher Duane Below From...

Royals score five in 10th, beat Tigers 8-3

DETROIT (AP) Alex Gordon's grand slam highlighted a five-run 10th inning for the Kansas City Royals, who rallied against the Detroit bullpen for an 8-3 win Thursday after Tigers ace Justin Verlander left with a thumb injury. George Kottaras put the Royals ahead 4-3 with a bases-loaded walk off Phil Coke (0-3). Darin Downs came on for Detroit after that, but Gordon broke the...
