There are only a couple options for sports fans this Tuesday night - a couple NHL games, which I just can't get into this time of year, and one huge baseball game. It is Game 3 in the American League Championship Series between the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers. Texas heads to Detroit with a 2 games to none series lead. The Tigers need to win tonight for a serious chance to head to the World Series. The Tigers have had their chances in both losses. Game 1 was a 3-2 Texas win. But it was a sloppy contest that took almost 5 hours due to two rain delays. Game 2 ended 7-3, but that final is deceptive. It was an 11 inning game that ended with a game winning walk-off grand slam. Detroit stranded 13 runners.  They were 1-12 with runners in scoring position, Ryan Raburn's three-run home run in the 3rd was the lone exception. Detroit's unquestioned ace is Justin Verlander, who started in the rain-marred first game. But down the stretch and in the postseason, Doug...

Scherzer’s Sliders

Max Scherzer has looked pretty good in his first ever postseason. He’s flashed some serious heat — bumping his fastball as high as 99 mph in his relief appearance last week — but there’s another pitch that’s been quietly killing opposing batters: his slider. Despite being thrown less often in the past two seasons than his four-seam fastball and his changeup, Scherzer...

Cruz' Boomstick Returns in Walk-Off Win

The Dutchstache was not mighty today.  Perhaps  Derek Holland partied a little too hard yesterday.  Perhaps the extra day of rest threw him off.  Whatever it was, he was not sharp.  At all.  And Eric Nadel even said Holland was perhaps a bit stubborn --- his fastball wasn't working, yet that's all he was throwing.  The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st...

A Stat for Feldman

Sully Baseball thinks there should be a stat to give Scott Feldman credit for Monday’s win in Texas: So Feldman doesn’t get the start. He doesn’t get the win. He doesn’t get a hold. He doesn’t get a save. He gets gotch. Sure he gets to have a low ERA and nice stats. But there SHOULD be a stat, shouldn’t there? A “Hey Nice Game!” Stat. A “He saved the bullpen”...

Report: Tigers' Magglio Ordonez Out for Rest of Postseason With Ankle Injury

If the Detroit Tigers are going to win the American League Championship Series and potentially the World Series, they reportedly will have to do so without outfielder Magglio Ordonez. ESPN's Buster Olney tweeted Sunday afternoon that Ordonez would miss the rest of the ALCS against the Texas Rangers, and the season, with an ankle injury. Ordonez has been hitting .385 for the Tigers...

Tough mentality helps Fister thrive in October

Doug Fister -- starting Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Rangers at 8:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday -- has far exceeded expectations with a bulldog approach that belies his lack of playoff experience.

Last Second Hit

With two out in the top of the ninth, Ramon Santiago singles. That chases Alexi Ogando in favor of Michael Gonzalez in a tie game, 3-3 between the Tigers and Rangers. Update: Mike fails to retire the lefty as Don Kelly doubles to the rightfield corner, and the Tigers have runners on second and third with two out. Gonzalez is out of the game. Update: Neftali Feliz comes on...
